The Onion now a pay site

It appears you now have to pay a fee, albeit a small one, to view articles uninterrupted.

I wonder if the site will maintain its popularity?

ETA: But only for non-Americans. Well, that’s fucking lovely.

I guess the question is, if I had to pay, would I still read it? I think the answer is “yes,” provided of course the subscription was pretty modest. $20 a year, maybe? And I know I’m crazy, but for me, the real obstacle with this sort of pay-to-play thing isn’t the money, it’s just the annoyance of signing up and digging out your credit card and thinking up yet another password.

I just poked around and scanned 10 or 12 complete articles. When does the pay part come into play?

If the Onion wants to make money, they should publish yearly collections again. Man, I miss those.

I suppose, logically, that they stopped because they weren’t profitable but they should sell one to me anyway.

Sometimes I love the Onion. This comment from them about the end of “Don’t ask, don’t tell.”

Pentagon officials said they have canceled two planned invasions in anticipation of the military slowdown expected to occur while troops are getting all their asking and telling out of the way.
the Onion.

I recall them trying this before for a while, many years ago, and then going back to being a free site. So maybe there is hope.

Passersby were amazed at the unusually large amounts of fail.

I can think of one large messageboard that did the same… Can’t recall the name somehow…

Read the Daily Mash instead!

Mmm, maybe a bit UK-centric.

I’ve subscribed to the The Onion on my Kindle. It’s only £2 a week, and they’ve given me so much free entertainment over the years.

Heck no. If I have to pay, I’m gone. The thing with the Internet is there is almost always something that is just as good out there for free. There are videos on YouTube that rival the videos, and the articles, while they have the funniest headlines, usually aren’t that great.

And $3.25 a week? That’s $169 a year! Even if I weren’t just a casual reader, I wouldn’t pay that much. That’s like 5 magazine subscriptions and 3 newspaper subscriptions. No site has that level of content.

You’re in America, you’re fine.

No more yearly collections? WTF? I thought it had been a long time! Crap!
