The Onion's coverage of the 9/11 attacks

This morning I am commemorating the 9/11 attacks by re-reading The Onion’s coverage of the attacks.

After those planes hit those buildings, we all seemed to be holding our collective breath and we were unsure when it was ok to laugh again. Mayor Rudy famously came out before the first new SNL after the attacks and told Lorne Michaels that it was “Ok to laugh again.” I remember Letterman finally breaking that tension as well (Letterman may have been the first national person to start making jokes again.)

Anyway, here is a link to The Onion’s 9/11 issue. I’m sure this has been posted before but I think it’s a good way to lighten things up on this sad anniversary.

I remember the huge headline on the front page that just said “HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!” I think that summed up how most of us reacted on that morning.

Michaels: Can we be funny?
Guiliani: Why start now? LIVE FROM NEW YORK, IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT!

To be more accurate, Lorne asked Rudy if “it was OK to be funny.”
“Why start now?”

My favorite article is the one describing how to talk to your children about the WTC attacks:

I just wanted to point out that the Onion waited until fifteen days after the attacks to post a 9/11 edition.

Another bizarre sign of seriousness I recall hearing about - the staff of Naked News remained fully clothed while reporting about 9/11.

That issue is so brilliant. One of my favorite bits is American Life Turns Into Bad Jerry Bruckheimer Movie:

“Everything human is pathetic. The secret source of humor itself is not joy but sorrow. There is no humor in heaven.” - Mark Twain

This isn’t about 9/11, but I feel I must mention the amazingly prophetic January 2001 article: Bush: ‘Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over’

I always liked this story from that issue of the Onion: “Not Knowing What Else To Do, Woman Bakes American-Flag Cake.”

This one actually choked me up a bit. It really summed up how I felt stuck in my super heated apartment in Brooklyn unable to open any windows.

I think my favorite was “Massive attack on Pentagon page 14 news”.

report on memorial

Oh, I forgot about that! Still very funny to me, if only because it’s still an afterthought (to everybody but the conspiracy theorists, who don’t get that if you wanted to fake something even the stupidest people would get you would have made a Bugs Bunny-style plane cutout in the wall.)

The Dopers didn’t do too bad a job with their own Onion headlines:

Of course, we in the Bay Area had our own real life Onion headline.

My favorite was published in the next issue:

A Shattered Nation Longs to Care About Stupid Bullshit Again

“Not Knowing What Else To Do, Woman Bakes American Flag Cake” might be my favourite Onion article that I’ve ever read.
