The Onion's Sports Coverage

Do people generally find the Onion’s sports coverage funny?

I ask because I often find it fairly bland compared to their other articles and videos, and I wonder if it’s because I’m just not that interested in professional sports (and, thus, not familiar enough with the subject matter to find it funny), or if it really is less funny. Some of the videos are decent, but they are rarely excellent.

I notice that they have expanded their sports coverage over the past few years, so there must be an audience for it.

I don’t follow sports very closely either , but I find their sports jokes are broad enough that I usually get them. They’re mostly along the line of a famous athlete or coach doing something silly, just like their politics or celebrity stories. Their story about a WNBA team moving to Tulsa was the first place I even heard that piece of news.

I think all their sports articles in the past few years has to do with the paper having a different set of writers than in the early 00s. The Onion is more well known and less of a “geek” thing than it used to be just a few years ago, so they have a different collection of writers than in the past. Wikipedia says there aren’t any women on the writing staff right now.

The best part of the site is the videos, in my opinion. The articles have always been hit or miss beyond the headline for the ten years I’ve been reading it online.

SportsPickle is usually excellent.
