The Open {Golf tournament}

2 out of the top 3 have won majors, but not in the last two decades!

Recent major winners in top 10 are Retief Goosen and Vijay Singh. Angel Cabrera and Jim Furyk are T14.

I’ll be rooting Watson for Watson but I just have a feeling that this tournament will be won by Vijay Singh.

Ladbrokes dot com has updated odds. Westy and Goosen are favorites at 7-1, VJ is 15-1, and Watson and Calc appear to be a value at 33-1.

Um, no.

Watson is at 5 under. Not sure what you were looking at.

I know it is unlikely, but can you imagine Tom Watson taking the walk to the 18th green on Sunday in the lead? At Turnberry no less?Might be the loudest crowd in the history of golf, gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

I can hardly think of a more popular potential winner on the Ayrshire coast than Tom Watson. I can’t look down the card and pick a winner, but sometimes age and guile beats out youthful vigour, particularly on a tricky course. So Calcavecchia then.

I really want Tom to win…but my pick is Goose.

Aye, well, we’ll see about the Goose. Home team hopes that Ross Fisher will play a sensible round tomorrow and go out in the last group or two on Sunday (and his wife can hold off giving birth!). Jimenez will do OK in any conditions if he can get an early night - if he stops after his third bottle of wine that is. I must admit I’ve never heard of Steve Marino, but then I don’t follow the US Tour at all. Is he any good?

Yup. I’d love to see Monty win a major, but even if he’d made the cut I think that I, and many other Scots, would still prefer to see Watson win his 6th Open title, which would be his 6th in Scotland.

Hell, I’d swap a Monty win for an England win at Lord’s on Sunday!

Marino has never won a tournament, but many veterans say he is the best golfer on tour who hasn’t. He is thought highly of by the Tour insiders, but the public has no idea who he is.

He apparently was not done yet. The coverage centered on Tiger so much it was hard to follow the rest. Daly is still in the hunt. He played the 559 yard par 5 with a utility wood and an iron.

It would Watson’s 5th Open Championship in Scotland.

Watson’s wins in Scotland are:

1975, Carnoustie
1977, Turnberry
1980, Muirfield
1982, Royal Troon

Watson won in 1983 at Royal Birkdale, in England.

I would love to see him win this weekend, but if he was to win one more, I wish it would be at St Andrews, where he came very close in 1984. The Road Hole did him.

Does anyone know why Troon is the only course designated as “Royal” while all the English Courses in the Rota have the the “Royal” designation?

England Courses:

Royal Birkdale
Royal St Georges
Royal Lytham and St Annes
Royal Liverpool

Daly is 5 back. I would love to see him in the final 2.

Damn, Watson could win it at 59 years old.

If Watson were to win, would this be a bigger accomplishment than Nicklaus winning the Masters at 46? I’d have to say yes but to me, this won’t be as emotional since Jack was always my favorite golfer.

Daly would be controversial. Watson would be the biggest shock ever. He does not even win on the Senior Tour.

Although Watson winning would be a great story, after watching the Shark have a similar run, I’m just not convinced the old man has a fourth great round in him. (Note that I’m not callin Watson a choker, as I would Norman.)

My bet would be on Lee Westwood.

Watson is tied for 18th all-time in wins on the Champions tour with 12.The last two in consecutive weeks April 08
(5 of those 12 were majors)

Yes, Watson is at best a parttime Senior tour player and he would be quite dominant on that tour if he played more often.

Bookies are still not showing much love for Watson

Westwood, Fisher 4-1
Goosen 5-1
Watson 7-1
Furyk 8-1
Goggin 10-1
Cink 14-1

Well, I was gonna post my bet for Westwood, but since he’s already taken I’m putting all my money on Thongchai Jaidae!

Think Watson is gonna call Norman up and find out what NOT to do between rounds 3 and 4? :stuck_out_tongue:

Norman’s problem last year was that the wind blew at about 30mph on Sunday and it became a test of strength, and he just couldn’t keep up with the younger guys. There are no indications that the same thing is going to happen tomorrow.

Watson looks awfully good.

Actually he looks less bad. The course is bringing everyone back. There were 2 rds barely under par today. Even Daly can get back in. He tees early and if the wind is not going then he can get a running start.
