I know it is unlikely, but can you imagine Tom Watson taking the walk to the 18th green on Sunday in the lead? At Turnberry no less?Might be the loudest crowd in the history of golf, gives me goosebumps thinking about it.
I can hardly think of a more popular potential winner on the Ayrshire coast than Tom Watson. I can’t look down the card and pick a winner, but sometimes age and guile beats out youthful vigour, particularly on a tricky course. So Calcavecchia then.
Aye, well, we’ll see about the Goose. Home team hopes that Ross Fisher will play a sensible round tomorrow and go out in the last group or two on Sunday (and his wife can hold off giving birth!). Jimenez will do OK in any conditions if he can get an early night - if he stops after his third bottle of wine that is. I must admit I’ve never heard of Steve Marino, but then I don’t follow the US Tour at all. Is he any good?
Yup. I’d love to see Monty win a major, but even if he’d made the cut I think that I, and many other Scots, would still prefer to see Watson win his 6th Open title, which would be his 6th in Scotland.
Hell, I’d swap a Monty win for an England win at Lord’s on Sunday!
Marino has never won a tournament, but many veterans say he is the best golfer on tour who hasn’t. He is thought highly of by the Tour insiders, but the public has no idea who he is.
He apparently was not done yet. The coverage centered on Tiger so much it was hard to follow the rest. Daly is still in the hunt. He played the 559 yard par 5 with a utility wood and an iron.
It would Watson’s 5th Open Championship in Scotland.
Watson’s wins in Scotland are:
1975, Carnoustie
1977, Turnberry
1980, Muirfield
1982, Royal Troon
Watson won in 1983 at Royal Birkdale, in England.
I would love to see him win this weekend, but if he was to win one more, I wish it would be at St Andrews, where he came very close in 1984. The Road Hole did him.
Does anyone know why Troon is the only course designated as “Royal” while all the English Courses in the Rota have the the “Royal” designation?
England Courses:
Royal Birkdale
Royal St Georges
Royal Lytham and St Annes
Royal Liverpool
If Watson were to win, would this be a bigger accomplishment than Nicklaus winning the Masters at 46? I’d have to say yes but to me, this won’t be as emotional since Jack was always my favorite golfer.
Although Watson winning would be a great story, after watching the Shark have a similar run, I’m just not convinced the old man has a fourth great round in him. (Note that I’m not callin Watson a choker, as I would Norman.)
Norman’s problem last year was that the wind blew at about 30mph on Sunday and it became a test of strength, and he just couldn’t keep up with the younger guys. There are no indications that the same thing is going to happen tomorrow.
Actually he looks less bad. The course is bringing everyone back. There were 2 rds barely under par today. Even Daly can get back in. He tees early and if the wind is not going then he can get a running start.
