Bumped.
Just listened to the audiobook of Sympathy for the Devil by Seth MacFarlane, a sf novella set in the Orville universe about, in essence, what might happen if you let a Holodeck raise a baby. Pretty good, despite some clunky turns of phrase. Bruce Boxleitner, who played the Planetary Union President, is the reader.
Not particularly original though. That sounds very close to an episode of Discovery from a few years ago. Here is the part that’s so similar, collapsed to avoid spoilers:
Summary
Last but not least, when the away team finds this Kelpien refugee, the eponymous Su’Kal, they discover that he’s basically been raised and educated by a deteriorating holoprogram his mother set up 125 years ago, stunting his development.
Though I don’t know the details of the novella, so it might not be nearly as close as I’m assuming. The basic idea seems extremely similar though.
But don’t take my criticism as meaning to be particularly harsh on MacFarlane. The Orville is an homage to Star Trek, and I take such similarities to be part of that. It doesn’t particularly bother me; on the contrary, it’s one of the reasons why I love the show so much. I will probably even try to get a copy of that book to read myself.
Understood, and thanks.
In the Orville novella, a Human scientist couple, in desperation, puts their baby boy into a simulator (Holodeck) when the Krill pounce on their hidden research base. They’re taken away by the Krill, who don’t know about the baby. The program is of 1914 NYC and their son is adapted by a nice childless couple who take him back to their native Germany… where he eventually gets caught up in National Socialism. Zany Nazi hijinks ensue. The simulator is still functioning just fine when the by-then-rescued couple returns, with the help of the Orville crew, and removes the now-grown and thoroughly unpleasant son from the program.
Okay, that does sound good. I’m going to definitely try to grab that book.
grabbed the book. i had kindle credits.
I thought you were bumping the thread with news about the possible next season
