Still working our way through S3, we just finished ep 8 tonight. Afterwards I hit imdb to find out more about the actors who play Bortus and Klyden. Holy crap, Chad Coleman, the guy who plays Klyden, was “Cutty” on “The Wire”!
And Tyrese on the Walking Dead.
I have never watched “The Walking Dead”. I guess I should add that to my list in the “shows/movies you’ve never seen” thread.
And Fred Johnson on The Expanse. I had no idea until I watched some behind-the-scenes thing on Disney+.
Wow! I would not have guessed that at all
Just finished the season finale last night. Quick question, if it hasn’t already been asked (sorry, I didn’t start watching until the series showed up on Disney+, so I’m about two months behind the thread and haven’t read through the who thing):
At the beginning of the wedding ceremony, when Ed starts with the comment about how it has been the privilege of ship captains since the sailing days, yada yada… Was that word-for-word taken from Jim Kirk’s wedding speech at the beginning of “Balance of Terror”?
Overall I liked this season, but there were an awful lot of callbacks to episodes from previous seasons that I barely remembered. And while the longer episodes were nice - it felt like it gave them more time to flesh out the stories - it also felt like there was a lot of unnecessary padding. Especially all the singing. I wanted to grab that guitar out of Malloy’s hands and smash it Belushi/Worf style.
Close, but different enough to defend against a plagiarism charge. Here’s Kirk’s line from Balance of Terror
Since the days of the first wooden vessels, all shipmasters have had one happy privilege, that of uniting two people in the bonds of matrimony. And so, we are gathered here today with you, Angela Martine, and you, Robert Tomlinson, in the sight of your fellows, and in accordance with our laws and our many beliefs, that you may pledge your…(dialog cut off by siren)
And here’s Mercer’s from Future Unknown
One of the great privileges that has always been bestowed upon ships captains since the days of the ancient seafaring vessels is the honor of uniting two people in matrimony. Claire and Isaac have been with us all for a long time. We have watched their bond develop and grow, through good times and bad. But through it all, that bond has endured.
Yeah, there’s still enough humor for me. Much of it just having quirky characters interacting. I much prefer that to the first season’s “funny lines”.
… and so fun. I mean, it starts with Alternate Mercer and Malloy as scavengers, enraptured by … a Twinkie?
That’s parsecs ahead of anything Roddenberry penned.
Picard says something very similar at Chief O’Brien’s wedding on TNG, and Adm. Ross at Capt. Sisko’s on DS9. See also: RE: Are ships captains allowed to marry people at sea?
Same, but that was a plus for me. Although we did go back and watch earlier episodes after the new ones to remind ourselves how it all fit together.
My mother and I watched seasons 1-3 in a binge that took us about a month (though the length of Season 3’s episodes made it a bit of a slog), so we caught all the callbacks the first time through. Prior to this, I’d only seen the first three or four episodes of The Orville.
Even then, Yaphit could be written out easily enough through a promotion and reassignment. That sort of thing happens all the time in Earth navies, and I imagine that the Planetary Union navy is no different.
Or “Yaphit decided to return to his home planet.”
Or just have someone completely different do the voice of Yaphit with no explanation whatsoever. Kind of like the Darrins in Bewitched, or the Beckys in Roseanne.
Or Mrs. Kravitz on Bewitched: The great Alice Pearce was dying of cancer and replaced by Sandra Gould
Or Louise Tate on Bewitch: Irene Vernon (13 Episodes) replaced by Kasey Rogers. (33 Episodes).
Or Frank Stevens {Darrin’s Dad}: Roy Roberts (7 Episodes) & Robert F. Simon (6 episodes) and they overlapped. ???
There were even 2 Aunt Hagathas. Reta Shaw for 4 episodes & Ysabel MacCloskey for 4 episodes.
Bewitched just liked screwing with our heads.
His cousin Murray replaced him unbeknownst to the crew, to cover for his having a date.
I kinda wish they had a chance to do an episode involving Yaphit’s family or at least other members of hos species. That could’ve been very funny and weird.
“Some of my best friends are gelatinous!”
His voice changed.
