The Orville season 3 (now on Disney+ also)

Guys.

ED HAD A BABY WITH A KRILL.

It’s ridiculous.

That’s consistent with Star Trek, in which species from various planets are also able to do so.

Spock was half human for crying out loud.

No sharks have been jumped.

This of course means that

Ed has been a Krill this entire time!!!

Yup. The Trekiverse is chock full of “half-breed” hybrids usually subjected to prejudice; of course The Orville’s universe would have that as the same racial metaphor. And Krill apparently think birth control is against the will of Avis.

Technically the Krill had a baby with Ed. Can’t help wondering how they square that with the “only Krill have souls” thing.

Yeah, I loved the interpretation of “Annie” (though I think they dropped the ball a little when Teleya used “light” in a positive way while talking to Ed.

At least in the case of Spock, one can imagine that the production of a half-Vulcan/half-human child took medical assistance (since the child was desired) - Teleya and Ed are apparently as fertile together as a young human couple, with no need for medical help

I can’t help but think that the “transcellular micrographing” procedure that made Teleya physically human while she was with Ed might have played a part. But that’s just speculation. I’m not sure how much of her body was changed in that procedure; if it was all surface stuff or if it affected her internal physiology as well.

Ah. That makes a little sense - and a brief reference to it in the script would have been nice.

Again this is Trek inspired and hybrids are all over the place there. Troi was part human part Betazoid. Torres part Klingon part human. There have been Bajoran Cardassian mixes. It goes on. The mixed race individual and the reactions to them is a well worn Trek trope. Special help not required.

Worf’s Ladyworf was half human, too. And they had a son (1/4 human, 3/4 Klingon) so the mixed breeds aren’t even sterile mules.

Agreed. I liked episode 2 better than 1, as there was a little more humor and less superfluous external shots.

But they didn’t really think through how the monsters knowledge / consciousness should work. All the Orville crew acted as though retaining the admiral’s knowledge and will and now having a new personality and knowledge was not merely the most obvious option, but the only option.
When it should be way down the list of possibilities.

It was also slightly weird how little time and thought was given to trying to restore them to human, given that, again, everyone believes their human mind was still extant.

I imagine the Circle of Clerics would be very unhappy with Teleya for forcing them to try and reconcile non-Krill are souless nonpersons with abortion is always wrong because Avis loves the little Krilldren?

On July 19, Seth MacFarlane is releasing a digital novella called The Orville: Sympathy for the Devil. It was originally intended as an episode for the current season, but Covid shutdowns prevented filming.

Yes, this was it: Ethics (episode) | Memory Alpha | Fandom

Great googly moogly, I didn’t realize that was him!: Alcuzan | The Orville Wiki | Fandom

The Krill-election episode was clearly inspired by contemporary US politics - a populist/Trumpian candidate, confidential election predictions that don’t come true, deepfake political ads, subsequent upheaval in foreign affairs, violence as a political tool, etc. A little obvious at times, but I liked it.

But yes, we definitely need more Bortus…

Also, note that Lisa Banes died a little more than a year ago. So that episode has been in the can for a while.

Apparently alien (and half-alien) children age in soap-opera years. 3x05 is a (well done) Very Special Episode, and clocks in at an hour and fifteen minutes.

Remember when The Orville was a comedy? …

I think this latest episode is the best of the season so far. Seth MacFarlane has really grown as a writer/director. Also…

While everyone did a great job, the guy who plays Klyden really deserves special credit for making him Joffrey Baratheon level hateable. At the end I was like "Yesss! Hit the bricks, bitch! So satisfying

I never felt that it was really a comedy. In the thread for Season 1, I described it as “an attempt to recreate a show from the '90s with some additional jokes”. If they have reduced the level of the additional jokes to TNG levels, that makes the re-creation more accurate, not less.

Now that I’ve been watching Strange New Worlds it’s notable to me how true Trek and The Orville have converged on overall feel and respect for their respective inspirations, despite The Orville’s weak start this season.

And dang Bortus has some pipes!
