The Orville season 3 (now on Disney+ also)

Reminded me of Paul Robeson.

I found it a bit less satisfying, myself, and I didn’t hate him, even though he’s wrong. I’d have liked to see him share with Topa his own origin story, so Topa could have understood that his objections weren’t base solely on an inflexible adherence to Moclan indoctrination.

The final scene, where they left orbit, really raised the bar for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

I feel like Episode 3 was the first episode that started to feel like the old show again, Episode 4 was getting better, and Episode 5 has them back in stride. It felt like an episode from the previous seasons. Overall not extremely heavy, with some good humor, and yet a very thoughtful and complicated subject and conflict with good character development.

Bortus yelling about the key being too high was straight up classic Orville. I laughed out loud at that bit.

I also like that they’re

still not going for the easy, “Everyone hugs and learns” endings. Klyden remains a jerk and follows through on his threat to leave. Even the “I wish you were never born!” line fits the character, and the situation.

Ep. 5 is the best of the season so far. I was worried they had lost the Mojo. Bortus is one of the best characters on the show.

Episode 5 is definitely the best of the season so far. Since this episode started with Topa’s desire to take on responsibility, I thought she might decide to sacrifice the opportunity to return to female in order to protect the lives of billions of people. The Moclan reaction felt too convenient but not unrealistic given the situation.

This may have been the most powerful episode of the series. And it’s a hearty “Fuck you!” to transphobes every where. Yes, I realize intersex is a better analogy to how the Moclans view femininity, but my point still stands. Speaking off, isn’t there an entire secret planet of Moclan females?

Yes. Unless I’m misremembering, that’s where their poet laureate lives.

I did not like Season 2’s time line stuff at all, and I’m not that crazy about the Cylons … ahem … Kaylons

However, I do like the Teleya plot.

Except it’s not secret anymore. The compromise was that the Union would not recognize it and the Underground Railroad transporting females whose families did not want to alter them to there would be disbanded, in return for the Moclans leaving them alone.

We’re on episode 1 of S3 because of this thread. I like & get Seth McFarlane’s stuff. I’ve been against any more Trek since S2 of Picard though with all the guest/cameos from TNG maybe we’ll have a go with some of that and perhaps the Strange New Worlds so long as that’s not a reboot/JJ Abrams thing.

From reading above seems like there are some good eps to come. Something good to watch in July between Stranger Things and Better Call Saul.

You were correct about that. We finally watched Ep3 and we found it to be pretty good! A really interesting premise and some humor (though much less in previous seasons, alas)

It’s not. The show looks modern (no cheap-looking tiny sets) but they take pains to make it look similar to the original series in a lot of ways; the screens look similar, the bright colors, all of the technology both handheld and in the ship. It’s doing its best to be a believable prequel to the first show, and tries to make everything fit in properly. Not at all a reboot or alternate timeline.

I too am a big fan of both of those shows as well and I’m all caught up on them. It’s painful that the last season of Stranger Things is reportedly 2 years away.

Wow. We’ve just Ep 5 to watch and 6 is on tonight. A lot to like with this show. We’ll somehow catch up on S1 & S2 in July.

I’m halfway through episode 6. Where are the whales? And the nucleer wessels?

BTW, it’s been a while since the previous season, so I can’t remember; what did Isaac do to betray the crew? I thought his people attacked the Orville and other Union vessels but he personally didn’t act against them?

It turned out that Isaac’s ‘research’ into human/Union behaviour was actually to ascertain whether they were candidates for genocide (he was deactivated once they reached their decision).

So

both SNW and The Orville do time travel eps same week?

Odd to set up their version as stating that multiple timelines would be created with the egg salad sandwich and then imply the alternate line never was.

I think these shows should avoid time travel. Leave timey whimey to Doctor Who.

Unspoilered. Ep2 was worse but this was close. IMHO.

I thought this was a fun and thoughtful episode. Time travel episodes are hard to get perfect so I’m willing to accept some inconsistencies

There should have been a scene at the end that said, “Three Months Later”, with Gordon eating a sandwich with a smile on his face.

I wonder about the car with the OVILLE plates. Likely that was the usual Hollywood made-up plates, but perhaps someone in the cast or crew really owned a car with those plates?
