The PasaDopeFest thread

Well, first I’d like to thank Ruffian (I almost misspelled that as “Russian”) for setting up this event. We had a large attendance of about 21 or 22 people (I’m trying to find the list, hopefully I didn’t lose it). It was great meeting everyone there.

And whomever it was that paid the bill…thank you, that was a very generous act.

Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my camera, but there were a few other cameras there. Everyone will just have to wait until someone else puts them on a site somewhere.

Oh, BTW everyone…next time you see DeathLlama, make sure to laugh at him…he’s a middle school band director! (Heee heee!!)

But Java wasn’t there, so you couldn’t give her my message. I saw her in chat last night though, so it’s okay.

I would say it sounds like you all had a great time, but the OP doesn’t have very many details. (Hint, hint) C’mon! What did you do??

::points and laughs at DeathLlama::

Hey, Monster104 told me to.

What was JavaMaven doing in chat? She was supposed to be in Pasadena!! What’s up with that?

Well, let’s see…we ate. And ate and ate. The food was really good. You didn’t buy servings just for yourself, but instead you bought large portions of food and then took however much you wanted, and then passed it on to other people that wanted some.

Let’s see…there was the initial confusion of trying to get everyone together, and the beginning awkwardness of meeting new people. Once we got past that though, we had a blast!

We had a few cheers whenever some other group in the restaurant would cheer (After which Ruffian would always crack up giggling). I think I was the loudest person there…sorry if I was too loud everyone! I tend to get like that sometimes in social events.

I don’t know exactly what was going on down on the far end of the tables, the booth area. It was hard to get over there to talk to people. On the other side, a bunch of us did movie quotes for a while (We were pretty knowledgeable of movies).

What else happened? I can’t remember some of the things right now…I’m hungry, so I must eat.

Ok, quick explanation:

I didn’t get out of class until 10 pm (I didn’t get Ruffian’s email until after I got home, so I couldn’t call). Of course, I get called to work this morning at the school, too, so I had to get my butt home.

I stopped into chat at midnight, right before I went to bed… that’s why I was there!

I really wish I could have been there–it was the right place at the wrong time!

So, when are we going to see pictures?

Yep. She said so last night, too.

Okay, Monster, that’s a bit better as far as detail is concerned. And it does sound like you guys had a lot of fun. Mmmm… food. ::drools:: So, yeah. What Java said. When are we going to see pictures?

You forgot the “PENIS!” game, Monster. Monster, Little Star, and Tuerc8 (or however it’s spelled) had this charming game called “PENIS!” It starts by one person saying “penis” quietly; the next person has to say it louder, and so on until someone’s yelling it. Monster liked to win. Ah, man, sometimes I miss high school.

The bad idea for me this time was the wine. I had one glass–one pathetic little glass–and it wiped me out. Wine (any alcohol, really) makes me very sleepy, and I was zoning there for a while. I was giggly before I was drinking; then I was m-e-l-l-o-w. This was partially because tuerc8 kept begging for some wine (he’s 17(?–a teenager, at least folks), so as the Morally Responsible Teacher both DeathLlama and I refused him and made a point of drinking all in our wine glasses.

pricciar got his glass full of cherries; Purple Crack Whore had purple nailpolish; many of us had cameras, including me. I’ll get the pictures uploaded here in a few days.

The food ruled, despite the garlic that was seeping from my pours for hours. Joanie, the waitress, was a spunky saint. Yah gotta love her! …And PUNdit tried to recruit her into Doper-dom; best we could do was get her to wear a nametag.

It was great to see Sue and talk with her; she’s always been so great with medical advice and overall info. She talked about life in the military medical field, and it really was awesome getting to see her before her return to El Paso. Melin and Highlander were great as always.

Heloise left a little early, but she was a real sweetie (and a stylish babe, gang! You really are a hot momma, girl!) and I do look forward to getting a chance to know her more at another gathering. domina came a bit later on, and it was good chatting with her (although she came right around when the wine was sucking my personality away temporarily). poopah chalupa sat way on the end of the booth, but I did get to speak with him a little bit before he left. He seemed a really cool dude, too.

Ursa came around 9pm, but unfortunately I didn’t get to do much more than shake hands with him. The wine (and my week) had wiped me out, and DeathLlama and I left around 10pm. We’d actually made an offer on a house right before leaving, and all week we’d been running around visiting places, going to a concert, etc., so we were really pooped. But it was awesome seeing so many new people! This is such a great community.

Most of the conversation I was a part of happened with Little Star, Tuerc8 and Monster, as they were seated across from us. It was initially a little weird for DL and I as they are just a few years older than our students, but then it’s weird because this trio of young Dopers do not compare with most of what we encounter in our profession. Despite the pleas for alcohol ( ), they are all three great people, not just great kids.

I look forward to the next one!

…and yes, whoever slipped Joanie that credit card and paid for all of us, a big fat THANK YOU! mmmmMMMM-WAH!

Where to begin where to begin?
I guess I should start at the start. It seems more convienient, and much easier than telling a story that has flashbacks, and mentions of a mysterious past spent in Barnes and Noble.

I got to Pasadena pretty early, I wanted to beat most of the traffic so I skipped out of work early. Killed some time at Barnes and Noble. (That is not hard to do, I can pick up a book and nobody will hear for me that evening, I had to be careful, I didn’t finish the book I found, and only read half of Adbusters.) I went over to the Bocca and saw Melin, Suep, Highlander and PUndit across the street. We were the first arrivals, so I went for a walk with those guys to see a short tour of Olde Towne Pasadena. When we got back we found out that the other parts of the group were waiting in the bar, after some asking around we found monster104,littlestar,tuerca8. These guys were very nice, I thought they were college students, then I found out they were 16 and 17. Poopah Chalupha came a little bit later and then Ruffian and DeathLLama then we went to our tables.

As usual, I was real nervous around the new folks, it always takes me two meetings to really talk to someone new. So, next time all you guys I met for the first time, bring ear muffs, I will be talking your ears off!

Oh my I was embarassed to get those cherries! But, also very happy. Then I was really really embarassed when I looked down and realized I had eating the whole glass full of cherries without offering any to the rest of the table. At that point I had to change seats and hide my crime. (Well that and the fact that I was starting to feel claustrophobic up against the wall.) Highlander and Sue were nice enough to let me change my position.

When I went to refill my glass of water I sat down next to Heloise. She was the exception to the rule, usually I can’t talk to the new ones, but I had no trouble at all making conversation with her, she listened to me babble on and on about Santa Barbara. She gets lots of credit for that. Plus, she was very pretty and had great clothing taste. And she learned an important rule, stickers and leather don’t mix.

Speaking of very pretty, Joanie, our bubbly waitress was pretty, she was funny and she knew how to serve a bunch of undecided peoples. Her best line of the night was when monster mentioned that the salmon wasn’t vegatarian friendly. “What you are hungry? There is still some garlic bread if you like.” Monster replies “Nah, I am not hungry”. She replies. “Well, that is good. Because, we really didn’t have any garlic bread left.”

After Heloise left I got to sit next to PCW and Fiona. They were both really pretty and really funny and a joy to sit next to. (Ok, I am gushing, I just went through four people mentioning how pretty they were. Everyone should now know that our whole table was pretty, there, that will save wear and tear on the t’s and y’s)… Peter was alot of fun, plus he aided me in my quest for more raviolis. I forget his screen name, but he needs to post more! One post isn’t going to cut it around here. I didn’t get to talk to Peter or Suo Na nearly enough.

As desert came Ursa Major and Cowboy Greg showed up. I got to talk to Greg for a little while when he got there, mentioning the new stressful job that is taking away from his posting time! How dare they! They make him a DBA and expect him not to post! No fair, indeed! We had a good time chatting about a few matters. When Ursa came I even got those two to be nostalgic about Los Angeles area TV. Children’s shows that included a Hobo that was played by a woman, but was supposed to be a man. Then monster came over and we started sharing some movie Lines. Get rid of that curfew for next time, Monster! And bring your brother.

Speaking of desert. It was delicious. I had to eat an extra canoli, as I saw it floating away. Hey, I didn’t want them just to throw it out. A huge thank you goes out to Melin for giving us that meal! Everything happened so fast, I didn’t realize we got it for free. Smooches and hugs to ya!

Apparently my hair wasn’t quite as well kept as I thought. lol. More than one person complimented me on my just out of bed look.

As the night wore on it was just one roundtable left over with Melin, Ursa, Cowboy Greg, Pundit, Highlander, Suep, and me. We discussed everything under the sun. From Terroism to cheese in coffee.

I have to say it was another successful doper gathering. I had a wonderful time, and I look forward to the next one. Great job setting things up Ruffian! Lots of hugs and smooches your way, too. Also congrats on the bid for the house! We should have had some penis cheers to celebrate that fact.

Ok. Now that I have written a novel, I should go.

pat

PS:
Java was sorely missed. But, sometimes class calls and you don’t get to celebrate. The good news is, monster and I guilted her into promising to host her own dopefest once she gets out of school. Woohoo.
PPS:
Thinking about it, all of the MIA dopers were sorely missed. Johnny! Hope you are feeling better! Shayna! You better be there next time! Arnold! What being a moderator you can’t meet up with us lowly ones? Hope you guys can all make the next gathering. We will defnitley have to have one before Johnny makes his way up to the great NorthWest.

All I know is Monster’s a dumbass for having kept me in the dark about this. ::shakes fist:: Curses!

Spoofe! Sorry about that. I feel like it’s my fault too. I mean, I promised I would give you a ride to the next fest in chat.
I hereby promise, if you need a ride to the next doperfest and I am going. I will give you excellent car service to and from the festivities!
(Of course excellent car service involves sitting in the passenger seat of a Chevy Spectrum, while I listen to whatever crappy music or talk radio station I choose.)

pat

Don’t blame me for missing the thread about the next LA shindig, bro. It ain’t my fault, it’s your fault for being so blind (And for spending all your time in other forums and the gun debate threads).

Sounds like ya’ll had a great time! A pity I couldn’t have been there to see it for myself. (Pasadena was just a bit too far outta the way)

Maybe next time!

unfortunately, nobody, including pricciar told me when it was! so i couldnt make it…oh well, i doubt i would have been able to anyway…
glad everyone had fun!

I really had a nice time, all of you who were there. It was cool to put a face to the names, and everyone was so darn nice! The next time there is one, I’ll try to stay the whole evening instead of fleeing early. Now that I feel I have gotten a chance to know some of you, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Yeah, as a first-timer to a Dopefest, I can say I felt very welcomed. I didn’t get to talk to everybody (showed up late, horrible traffic), but I enjoyed talking to Sue and PUNdit, Melin and Highlander, wrenchr, Ruffian and PurpleCrackWhore. Somehow I wound up talking mostly to FFF people, which was enlightening because I didn’t even know the board existed. I had two glasses of chianti and it also started putting me to sleep, so I didn’t hang around for the post-dinner discussion.

Another side-effect of being late was that, after vague directions from the front desk, I ended up wandering into the wrong room of the restaurant. I heard some people at the bar talking about an arranged 7:00 meeting, so I went over and had the following exchange:

Me: Is this the Dopefest?
Guy1: No, but it sounds good!
Guy2: Is this about drugs or about stupid people?

I was advised later that I should ask for Cecil Adams, although I suppose the responses wouldn’t be as entertaining.

I’m glad somebody explained the penis game–all I knew was, I was sitting there chatting and suddenly people were yelling “PENIS!” at the next table. I was wondering if it was a Doper ritual to which I was not yet initiated.

I certainly would love to come to future gatherings and meet the rest of the gang. Just one small request: next time, can we go someplace a little less loud? We don’t all have Monster’s pipes.

I’m really sorry to have missed you all.

I e-mailed Ruffian at the last minute to see if it would be all right if I showed up despite not having RSVP’d previously, but our system was having problems and I didn’t get her reply in time. I decided not to crash the event.

I’m glad to hear you all had such a great time!

I’ll take you up on that, even if we both have to be naked and smeared with mustard.

(Please say we have to be naked and smeared with mustard. Please?)

You mean I missed a free meal? SHIT!

And an excellent meal it was, too. I shall be going back to that restaurant.

Purple Crack Whore has posted pics of the get together here:

LOL…I love the pics.

And yep, this confirms what I always thought. Monster is a hottie. And Ursa. And pricciar.
