I don’t see this attitude as offensive as Shinn’s attitude because the land that is Israel has always been peopled by a variety folks…not just observant Jews. Keeping McDonald’s and other commercial entities out of a historical place is not, on its face offensive. If someone was to argue (as Shinn suggested) that it’s a shame that signs of Western culture have seeped into China, I wouldn’t be surprised if that person was pitted.
I wouldn’t surprised if such a person found themselves pitted, especially by British expats.
I’m not hung up on whether his attitude is bigotted or not. I just think his opinion is kind of sucky and it’s not surprising that people have found it insensitive enough to pit. Cultural elitism tends not to go over well here.
My point was I don’t think you can infer what his attitudes are towards Arabs (Christian, Muslim, or whatever). Would I be surprised if someone who wants a more Jewish country to have a problem with living with non-Jews? No. But I don’t think we have enough to go on either way.
Thanks for this, you have captured what I am trying to say perfectly. Implicit is “not keeping Kosher” is that I am of a different religion or not devout enough. This is what upset me. If he complained that kosher places were hard to find, or didn’t offer a diverse enough range of offerings I would support him. He is trying to impose his view of religion on others (even if not actively)
Someone somehow please show me how he is “trying to impose” his view on religion on others.
Do you think his participation on the board is a covert attempt to change Jewish society ? Maybe he’s an agent for a super secret Jewish organization assigned to infiltrate the SDMB and influence American support for Kosher so America can pressure Israel to go more Kosher.
Trying to change world opinion ?
Look, if you buy that then I have a doozy for you.
Oh, I do too. I’m just saying it’s so out there-conspiracy nuts always amuse me. (Like the Stormfront morons)
ETA: I’m NOT saying that anti-semitism, or that bigotry is funny. But nutjobs are.
