I rented this on DVD this weekend, and really didn’t understand the most basic premise…so, what the heck was going on, really?
Why would Gene Hackman’s character finally break under the (weak) interrogation and questioning and confess to the two rapes and murders, even when he obviously knew he was innocent? He even began describing what he had done, how he had done it etc… although he knew he hadn’t. Why?
Was his confession supposed to be due to the guilt he felt over his relationship collapse, his visiting of prostitutes and his internal obsession with younger women?
I could understand this all happening this if he was under major duress during the questioning, but it was really an informal chat only lasting about two hours, seemingly.
Was there some underlying psychological angle I completely misunderstood? Thanks.
