The Pope's Butler Did It (maybe)

Yes, the Pope’s butler is on trial for theft – for allegedy stealing documents from the pope which would expose church corruption.

The story mentions that he is likely the source of a bunch of stories leaked to the Italian press, and one in particular about an archbishop who was deputy governor of Vatican City, and after complaining directly to the pope about what he saw as rampant corruption, was transferred away despite his objections. I would like to know more about these stories – I’m not sure any of them have gotten into the American press.

The guy has a pretty strange defense. He claims to have stolen the documents so he could better inform the pope about internal corruption. But he stole them from the pope, and I would think that would interfere with the pope reading them.
