The Porn Czar

Has anyone seen Orgazmo? It’s about some Mormon Utahite (Utahian, Utahese?) who gets sucked (pun intended) into making porn? Done by that dirty filthy South Park guy, Trey Parker(?). Pretty funny.

You can call me the King of Futility
There’s a purpose to my actions, I just haven’t found it yet
You can call me the Crown Prince of Irony
It’s a crown I wear with dubious pride; it keeps falling down as I swim against the tide

“porn around here positively sucks” gee, Cristi, that’s just the kind of porn I’m looking for!

I live in and actually love Utah. The current brouhaha is thus:

The state-funded position created by the Legislature is for a lawyer in the Attorney General’s Office whose task is to help communities drive pornography and obscenity from their midst. The move, underscoring Utah’s prudish image, has become fodder for media from Portland to Manhattan.

Utah’s new smut czar must have a background in investigating and in prosecuting anti-smut laws. He or she also will be asked to help write a model anti-smut law for cities and counties that might want to toughen their tools to “restrict, suppress, or eliminate” pornography and provide information “about the dangers of obscenity.”

The office is funded at $150,000 annually.

The above is from the Salt Lake Tribune.

pepperlandgirl – “Is this the first step towards government controlled censorship?”

No. This is another step. Utah is a beautiful state. I love it here but am saddened by the very obvious attempts to legalize censorship and also their flaming desire to legislate morality.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with what most (in Utah) would call pornography. I don’t find anything wrong with healthy adults wanting to look at photographs or movies of beautiful, healthy adults engaging in sexual trysts or poses. I’m not talking about kiddie porn or bestiality porn. Again, I’ve made my views very clear; children and animals cannot consent. Adults can.

The real problem with what Utah wants to do is in defining “pornography” and “obscenity”. To me, a photo of a beautiful, naked woman or man is not pornographic nor obscene. That’s the rub, folks. What IS pornographic? What IS obscene? Community standards must be based on the community. Utah seeks to short circuit that and have “one” person decide. I don’t like that idea at all.

Padeye – Edwin Meese also had/has (I haven’t kept up with him at late, he could be dead for all I know) one of the largest collections of porn in the U.S. How… interesting! Sure, sure, he collected it for his commission… but I’ve read that he had the collection long before he was appointed. Go figure!

Thank you Byzantine, I of course have access to the Tribune, but I’m too lazy to read it. Also, I have very little patience for that particular newspaper. BTW, what part of Utah are you from? I grew up close to Park City.

“The bitch, oh the bitch, the bitch is back…I’m a bitch cuz I’m better then you, it’s the way that I move
The things that I do…” Elton John
“People try to tell me thoughts they cannot defend…” The Moody Blues
“To start, press any key. Where’s the any key?” Homer Simpson.

I’m in SLC. The Trib isn’t that great but the OTHER paper is even worse. They should just call it the Church Paper and be done with it. Like Ch. 5 news!
