Peanut erl is heatin’ up. Turkey is prepped and ready to fry. Forty-five minutes from when it goes in til done. Good deal!
Oh, in the interest of making sure our guests are not served sump’n less than top quality, we decided to slice a little piece of the lane cake. Just from the end, mind you, so we could sample it bein’ as it was an experiment and all.
Before I was a consultant, I was an end user. I became a consultant because I drove the consultants nuts, not so much with my questions, as by coming up with better answers than the ones they knew (as one of them put it, “if you can’t beat them, hire them”). They weren’t technical either.
I’ve only learned how to open a table directly about 7 months ago; I worked as a consultant for almost 7 years without learning that.
So why is the dude with 4 years programming experience who taught me how to read tables asking me how to find stuff in them? I’m trying to write functional requirements (1) in Spanish, while sitting en una puta jaula de grillos where people talk in three languages and I can barely hear myself think!
Can I kill somebody now?
1: a document explaining to an analyst what is it I need the patch I’m asking for to do, and which he then needs to translate for his programmers so they can in turn translate it for the computer
Lisslar–are you sure I haven’t met you at some family gathering like the one I’m going to today? I think your SIL must be related to my SIL.
I am going to Tgiving out of respect for my FIL. And after I’ve been there about 2 hours or so (decent amount of time), I am going to walk home, thus removing me from an awkward and disliked social event and making up for me not running today. The inlaws live about 1.5 miles away from us.
Advice for all those not yet married: don’t live that close.
It’s a beautiful day here. I do like a sunny Turkey Day. I miss the smell of roasting turkey in the house, though. I’ve managed to have the last 2 Tgivings, IMS. I did bake pecan pie last night. I feel MUCH better today than I did last night. Sleeping 12 hours will do that for a person.
I must have missed the Lane Cake recipe. Was ist das?
And have a happy Thanksgiving, all. We are all here and (mostly) healthy; we have enough resources to access the internet and enough intelligence to use it (somewhat) wisely. These are all very good things. I am thankful for them all.
Turkey is rotissing - it smells gooooooood. Gravy is done - waiting for any drippings that may come off the bird. N.O.T.s are in the pot with some garlic salt and onion bits, waiting to be cooked and mashed. In about an hour, I turn on the oven again for the dressing, the broccoli rice casserole, and the sweet taters w/marshmallows. Then I’ll get the succotash to simmerin’ and start frying the bacon for the brussels sprouts.
We’re looking at 1:30 or so for eat time.
**FCD **took his folks down to the marina to see our boat. They’ll be back in an hour or so. Taz does not get along with the inlaws’ cairn terrier, Abby, so he’s been hiding a lot.
The house smells good and I’m enjoying the leisure. 'Cept I’m hongry!!! Is it too early for a little ice cream??
Happy thanksgiving, everybody who’s partaking, and happy Thursday to the rest. We’re having a quiet day thus far; Papa Tigs took the Idiots out for a good run, so they’re sacked out for the day, and the humans are in various stages of cleaning up to go out to eat a bit later. And then come back and veg. Maybe I can finish that sock today, whilst ignoring the various stupidities that are on the teevee.
FCM, would you email or PM me, please, with directions to your place? Muchas gracias.
It’s a really pretty day here. I do miss the wonderful smells of cooking T’day dinner, but not the work involved, at least not for just us. So those of you who are cooking, enjoy it for me, okay?
I’m up and blurfy–gots my cawfee, though, so that’s good…
I’m doing the meat parts of TGiving, stuffed turkey and gravy and also a Dutch Apple pie my daughter says is necessary for a proper dinner. We’re the smart ones and have our dinner around four or five so I don’t have to put the bird in until 1300-1330, and I’ll finish the browning process over at my daughter’s house. Additionally, a friend dropped by last night with one of his lethally smoked hams, all covered in a pineapple sugar glaze and unbelievably delicious so we’ll hack some hunks off that to bring as well.
Yesterday we took all the dogs and the grandboy out to the Sandy River–it was a great success as you can see. Bear swam for the first time that we know of, and they all three were chasing the ball and each other and a fine time was had by all.
Okay, oven’s hot, time to make some cornbread for stuffing and put together a pie–have a great day, y’all, and remember to wear your elastic waist pants!
SmartiePants there’s some definite doggy heaven goin’ on there!
Mr. Turkey is fried.
To perfection!
Ok, so we were supposed to eat around twelve and it’s after that. However, guests are havin’ a good time. Wine is bein’ consumed along with a super nummy artichoke dip. Mr. Turkey is resting. In a bit carvin’ will commence. So the [del]pigout[/del] feast is delayed 'til oneish. It’s all good!
LiLi, I can’t believe Demon-Bitch SIL From Hell (who shall hereafter be simply referred to DBSILFH) is trying to sic her mommy on Mr Lissar. I guess even parenthood can’t make some people grow up.
Happy Turkey Day to all you 'Muricans out there. Once again, please allow me to remind you that all leftovers can be sent to me for consumption.
I decided to take tomorrow off because I happen to have a vacation day I need to use up and we desperately needed a rent-a-car-and-run-lots-of-errands kind of day. Also, I think the bosses could use a gentle reminder of the universe falls apart when I’m not in the office… and how they seriously need to hire someone else to take part of my workload.
OK, off I go to complete my employee self-evaluation. Clearly, as I am a rockstar, I shall give myself a glowing review and above-average score across the board. Hopefully my manager will agree.
ETA: Nava, I feel your pain. Writing requirements is a big enough pain in the ass without any added complications (actually, so is reading requirements and trying to map them to as-is functionality… but that’s my personal hell and I won’t bore you with it)
Oh, she’s not coming. I laughed for about ten minutes when I imagined her mother (who wouldn’t talk to anyone not related to her at their wedding) in a roomful of Mr. Lissar’s relatives. (This is going to sound snotty) They’re well-travelled, mostly fairly well-off, literate, interesting wine snobs. The SiL’s family is extremely redneck, totally uninterested in anything outside of Napanee (not a large town) or their family, undereducated interfering screamy slobs.
It would be horrible.
And possibly funny, but it would wreck our Christmas with the family.
Anyway, we wouldn’t go if SiL and Mommy were coming, and Mommy is definitely not invited.
Happy Thanksgiving to all the Weird Americans Who Have Thanksgiving On the Wrong Day!
Maybe they’re being really, really conscientious about service and cutting off the juice to their own building before inflicting outages on others
Right…
That was truly beautiful
Now, why would you have especially me in mind, I wonder…?
(Did I miss any smilies…? :o)
(and ouch! Hope it isn’t hurting too much… as funny as it is for strangers to hear, must have been painful :()
I’m heading into the weekend after a bone-crushingly busy day, but all the kids are home for the weekend, and Special Teen turns 16 on Monday. I feel old. And in fact I’m getting older yet, one day before, on Sunday…
Food is consumed, dishwasher is washing, everyone else is playing cards, and I’m enjoying a little sorta-solitude. **FCD **thinks I’m being a poopyhead, but I truly, deeply HATE HATE HATE playing cards. I don’t have a brain for strategy, it’s no fun losing, and winning, if it ever happens, is pure luck.
**MamaTigs **- email sent.
Dinner was pretty good, but I think the turkey rotissed a bit too long. I have declared that any food for the rest of the day will be self-grazing. I ain’t cooking any more.
Temps outside in the upper 40s and it’s very sunny and pleasant - I just took Scruffy out to water the grass. Poor old Taz will be sooooooooo glad when Abby leaves. He’s terrified of her, and she’s just a bratty terrier.
That’s all for now. I’m too stuffed to think. Except I think I need to get some lotion on my poor dried-out hands.
rigs sorry I was remiss re your query on Lane Cake earlier. This cake is not easy to make despite what the recipe site claims. Also, I don’t do candied cherries so those were not a part of my cake which has been pretty thoroughly decimated. Just a couple pieces left for later on today munchin’.
Like MOOOOOOM said food has been consumed. The kitchen is a wreck still but the dishwasher will take care of most of that. Ima bake some of those brown and serve rolls later cause one of my favorite things is brown and serve rolls and leftover turkey. I pull the rolls apart and stuff 'em with turkey. MMMMMMM!
Ol’ y’all know who is leavin’ in the mornin’ to go see family for a couple days just cause. Ima go see my family on Sattidy and come back Sunday afternoon since I have to work tomorrow. We’ll both be back in town Sunday afternoon lateish. I may spend the night at his place or he may at my place. We shall see. His laundry is washin’ right now so he’ll have clean stuff next week and I can do mine tomorrow evenin’. One must have clean drawers after all!
Today has been good. Good company. Good food. Good weather. High 60s and sunny. Matter of fact folks that arrived durin’ the turkey fryin’ hung out on the back porch cause it was nice and the turkey smelled so good.
Ok, that looks way too much like work to me. Glad it was good, but I’ll pass on the making of it.
#2 son and I walked home (sop to my conscience for not running today). It was a nice walk, but will get cold once the sun goes down. Speaking of winter weather, I’m reading a good book called Winter World by Bernd Heinrich. It’s not lyrical or anything, but is interesting about how mammals and insects etc adapt and survive winter.
Tgiving was ok. My FIL is not looking well, but not anywhere near hospice etc yet. MIL doesn’t change. SIL and her kids were ok, her husband was not. I was not a part of this conversation, but I did overhear him say two racist, nasty “jokes” about Obama. Of course, the whole family is up in arms about the Dems being in the WH as well as the “changes” promised.
I hate white trash. Truly I do. If he has said it to me, I would have called him on it, but the moment went so fast. And I feel like a dufus for not saying anything. Grrrr.
The club cooked turkey was ok–a bit battered from the trip in the car. If I had to grade the whole day, I’d give it a C. (does anyone grade their holidays? Ok, I’m weird).
Favorite quote of the day: SIL “Since the stock market went down, I am now fucked if he (jerks head to husband) dies. Why, I’d have to get a job!”
It was even more amusing in person.
Noone Special, I like the way you think, & I agree with you.
What am I thankful for? My kids have a place to live. My older daughter & family are in western Nevada, have a place to live & seem to be financially secure there. My younger daughter & her family are here with us, my husband & me, until they get onto their feet. Speaking of which, I’m thankful that my SIL just got hired, into the same company I work for.
I’m thankful that my 75-year-old mother is in good health, and continues to be independent.
Best wishes to fellow dopers. Happy holidays to all you & yours.
OK, looks like everyone here already ate T-day dinner except me and my kin, 'cause we’re a bunch of freaks who like to eat dinner at night.
BIL just dropped by to pick up some tablecloths and other serving stuff. I already chopped and fried up some pork with onions and garlic powder to put in half of the stuffing - all of the stuffing will have onions and celery, but half will have pork and half won’t, so my sister the vegetarian can have some.
Before I go, a few things I’m thankful for:
[ul]
[li]Still having a job.[/li][li]None of my relatives died this year (crosses fingers)[/li][li]We haven’t lost our house.[/li][li]I didn’t need surgery this year, and my health isn’t much worse, other than the carpal tunnel.[/li][li]My kid doesn’t need braces.[/li][/ul]
OK then, off to finish the stuffing and transport it to sis’ house. Back later.
