The Pros and Cons of...... Cecil

You know, I agree that media is entertainment driven by ratings, but just because something happens in another country doesn’t mean that it has nothing to do with you. If the death of that girl caused a riot between two ruling families in Vietnam, which then lead to violent clashes, then civil war, then an escalated military action that attracts the UN, which then calls my uncle into action, where he is later killed, it does manage to have something to do with me. Not to mention the effect military actions can have world economies, etc.

It’s not unprecedented. I’m sure my great-grandfather had no idea that the death of some Archduke in Europe would have such an effect on his life either.

Some events have the potential to being the tinderspark to a much larger event.

Besides, I have never seen the American media cover the death of any child in some country unless there is an American connection and the potential for becoming a very serious political event. For example, the soldier who killed a young girl in Bosnia. This may or may not have a diect effect on my life, but I still want to know about it.

I just wanted to say that I really like your user name Morris. REALLY REALLY LIKE IT!! The reason is that Morris is my first name. See there, to all who believe that I wouldn’t dare post on a non-religious type post there I did it!

Yes, and that might be your most pointless post ever.

BTW, where do you go to school? Any chance you’d be willing to change your SN? "wouldn’t dare post on a non-religious type post . . . " HUH? Perhaps this is what you mean:

“So there! To all those who didn’t think I would ever dare post to a non-religious thread, there! I did it!”

Maybe that’s closer to what you meant?

Reckon that was just a bit gratuitous, Patrick?

i have to . . . . . .admit . . . . . . for someone who . . . . . only posted three times. . . . mo . . . . .rr . . . . . is. . . . . .really made . . . . .an . . . . . . . . . impression on. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . me.

i may come across a bit… like ive got a “opinion” to put out here… sorry… ill try my best to … take a step backward and see it all afresh.

ok… here goes…

picmr : thank you… you seem to be correct on many issues here. i realize that while “cecil” … or in this case whoever actually writes the responses under his name … may feel that he can write a response taking opinions into account i do not believe that we should … still give him the respect of being “right in all circumstances”…
… if you see what i mean… i have explained myself poorly…
david b: … the lord gave us the book… the book… to believe in.

imagine if that contained no religious conotations at all, to avoid causing religious offence or arguement. Still, it seems straightforward. the word is given… we believe.

suasponte : Yes. the economist contains mainly trivial articles of little or no importance to everyday life.

and the universities bit… that is an interesting point… . Leave folklore out of this… i find it very relavent… as the stories contained within… are ones to remember… as they often repeat in life… and the medium of the lore… is often … an art in itself.
The triviality here i see… is that we are given isolated snippets of “information”… there is no rhyme or pattern.
A thourough investigation of any topic posed here would be… good… but a 5 minute read only adds to the clutter of modern life

Polycarp : i have been searching for a long time for the truth. i have ended up turning to art… where i can make up my own truth (in my case it is music)… science… through my education… but that could never be adequate in all fields… i only study what … my course lends me to… … and the net… where i can interact with likeminded … or more importantly non-like-minded people…

Dr lao: an interesting point of view. This definetely deserves further investigation

beaker: believing in nothing = not believing.
remember that girl killed in the tianamen square riots?.. … as she died her image was broadcast to most westerninzed countries… it was those clips that inspiried the worlds attention … to those riots as insignificant as they may have been given the number of human rights violations which may or may not go on in such circumstances… … i do not believe it was information we were given about that event… it was not an isolated one… … there is no reason why that girls death was any more important… except… she wasnt wearing too much… but thats a cynical side track…

Lastly to the many who do not like my … format of response… i use icq so i end up using the “…” button whenever i am not typing… it gives an pretty accurate indication of how much thougfht goes into each statement. Except with these posts… where it is quite meaningless. Sorry. My bad. I will try restrict my …s in future.

this seems to be a message board of intelligent conversation. i like it here.
