The Purge Anarchy. I liked it. (Open Spoilers)

Spoiler free review: a little heavy handed in the symbolism and some cliched characters but very tense moments and if you buy the ridiculous premise it works as good thriller.
Some Space…

The first Purge was essentially a Home Invasion movie. This one is most definitely bigger in scope. Basically it was like every idea they had for a sequel that they could make were all thrown in: Couple trapped outside? Check. Decent guy done wrong decided to use the Purge for revenge? Check. Mother and Daughter trying to survive? Check.

The 1% vs. the rest of us that the first movie just kind of touched on is laid on thick here and the hints that America is essentially in control by the Tea Party hits you over the head. Still, I found myself really getting caught up in it, wondering who would live and who would die and just overall found the movie entertaining.

One Easter egg I completely missed but my friend caught: there is one direct connection to the first one. The nameless Vet from the first movie makes a cameo. After it was pointed out, I checked IMDB and sure enough it was him.

Damn. I had free tickets to go see this, but couldn’t. I thought the first one had some really good potential, but just never quite got there. This one, going by the trailers alone, looked like a vast improvement. Thanks for the review. Can’t wait until it hits Redbox.

I liked that we got to see a lot of what was only hinted at by the first move (ie how the working class & the 1% deal with the purge). The New Founding Fathers of America aren’t just fascists they’re basically a cult to boot (as driven home by the right white praying over the poor black man they literally purchased as a human sacrifice). And even the 1% aren’t as safe from the Purge as they’d like to believe; though I wonder if the stockbroker was caught by the Resistance or if he was just stupid enough to steal from other rich people.
