The Quitting Smoking Diary

Been on Zyban for approximately five weeks… havent had a smoke in over four. Im 37 now and have smoked since I was 14. Other than some sleepless nights when I first started taking the drug, which they say is expected, I havent had any other side effects.

The way it was explained to me was that if after being on the drug for three weeks you are still having bad cravings, then the drug isnt working for you and you should look for an alternative method.

I have two friends who started it the same time I did. One couldnt take the side effects and quit taking it and one has been doing wonderfully. I imagine body chemistry has alot to do with it.

Good Luck

This is for eve:

And for Satan, April 8th was my three month anniversary, also with Zyban. I’m off the drugs for about two weeks now, and really feel great.

I haven’t time to go into more now, but I’ll be watching this thread.

Good Luck.

You’d think that Superman would be a good person to invite to a barbecue but trust me, he’s not. I mean, sure he can cook the hot dogs fast with his heat vision, but they all taste of charred eye boogers.

Okay, kill the thread. I just smoked…

 KIDDING!!

Yer pal,
Satan

Y’all have inspired me! I see my doctor on May 8th to talk about Zyban, the patch, etc.

I’ve been smoking since I was 19. I’ve got to quit soon or I’m going to end up with emphysema (like other members of my family).

Don’t cheer me yet… I’ll let you know when I’ve actually gone a day without cigs.

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

Congratulations, Satan!

And no offense intended, but you don’t know how much it upsets me to read that you, Bucky and Delta stopped smoking this weekend. Why? Because (oh gawd, I can’t believe I’m going to admit this here) I also tried to quit smoking this weekend and was going to post this very same topic to see if anyone else wanted to quit with me and form a sortof support group. But I failed - miserably. At 8:00pm last night I went out and bought a carton of cancer sticks. :frowning: Now I wish I’d have followed through and posted about it.

I don’t smoke nearly as much as you did, Satan. I only smoke a half a pack a day. But even 10 cigarettes is too many. ONE is too many. I hate this habit more than I can even put into words.

It’s dangerous
It stinks
It’s unattractive
It’s just plain gross

Over the past 3 years I have attended a 6 week stop smoking class at the hospital, been hypnotized twice, tried accupuncture, patches, gum and gone cold turkey. I’ve tried exercise in place of smoking. I’ve cut straws in half and stuffed them with cotton. I have at least a half dozen stop smoking relaxation audio tapes at home. And the longest I’ve lasted has been 5 painfully unbearable, teeth-grinding, hair-pulling days.

I guess I’m just weak.

I wish you guys the best of luck and I’ll be rooting for you all the way!

Omigod, Nicky, where did you get that movie of me?!

My wife quit three weeks ago. Used the patch for the first 10 days then nothing. Gained 20 or so pounds and never looked better!! Because of her abstinence I’ve changed my smoking routine(at home at least…but I still smoke 4-5 cigs at work.) House smells better (cleaner). I find I’m brushing my teeth and washing my hands after every smoke while at home. Bought the patches for myself yesterday but haven’t started them yet. She’s 38 and smoked for 18 years. I’m 33 and have been smoking for 21 years. I’ve only tried to quit once before and that lasted eight days.

Because I love my fiance, and he seems to think that my affirming him here, publicly, is much more meaningful than the words of encouragement I give to him in private…

Honey, I’m very glad you’re doing this. If you need anything from me to help you through, I’ll do it.

Of course, you already knew this, but now the rest of these people do, too.

Way to go, Satan!

I quit January 2, 2000. I mean, January 1 would have been tacky. My advise is: go cold turkey. No patches, no gum, nothing.

I smoked 1.5 pack of Gauloises for 6 years. I went from full to none, and have not smoked since. Well, I do smoke one cigar per day, but I smoked cigars before I took up the cigs.

Hang in there man. You’ll be fine. I was cranky for about a week, and suffered some insomnia for about three weeks. After that, your body has worked the venom pretty much out of it.

WTF? You’ve been cranky since Jesus was a cowboy, Dutchie. In fact, your sig should be:

Don’t crank my crank, because I’m cranky.

Good luck to you all. It’s not easy, but it sure is worth the struggle.

Way to go Satan! I’ve been smoke-free for a decade and feel great. One tip. Stay away from booze and watch the coffee for a month or so. They always made me want to smoke.
And stay busy. Walk, play basketball, clean the house, whatever…Hope that helps.

When you get a craving, remember that whether you smoke or not, the craving will pass. The difference is that if you smoke, you will have another craving and another and another …

Hang in there pal

Smoke free since 9/9/99 (Invert that !)

Hang in there, friend. Don’t have anything in the way of personal experience in this matter to share with you, which is a good thing, but, um… just remember, I’ll, uh… Hmm.

Got it. I’ll make your life a living hell when you come down here, I guarantee that!

(OK, I hit the stop button. But I’m guessing that didn’t stop it. Anyway, I wanted to add:

I’ll make your life a living hell if you don’t quit smoking! Doesn’t make much sense without that, does it?

Good luck Satan! I’m rather new to posting here (I’ve actually been lurking quite a while), but I thought I’d reply here, because my quit date is Wednesday, and I have a question for anyone else who is on Zyban. I’ve been on the Zyban for 11 days, and the cigarettes do taste godawful. I am really looking forward to going off the Zyban, because the dry mouth is wretched and it seems to be totally wreaking havoc with my emotions. Is anyone else having that same experience with it? Massive mood swings? I don’t know, it could be just stress, god knows I’ve got plenty of that going on. Heh. But it’s weird, at one moment I can be happy to the point of giddiness, then a few minutes later, on the verge of breaking down crying. Anyway, anyone else have this side effect?

Congrats, hon. Best of luck to you in kicking this. I don’t know about smoking, but I do know that breaking an addiction to ANYTHING can be really hard.

Good luck, and I’ll be sending good thoughts your way!

DAY TWO

This was the first day I was in the office as a non-smoker. Really, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Sure, I had the urge to go outside and smoke. But I just didn’t. And it wasn’t too horrible.

The side effects of the drug incluude dry mouth and a little insomnia (well, seizures too!) but I an only dealing with a little cotton in the mouth. Beats smoke on the breath, however…

I downloaded a little timer thing which shows to the minute how much money I have saved since I quit, and how much longer I will get to live (assuming I don’t get hit by a bus).

This is what it tells me as I sign off now…

So far, so good…

Yer pal,
Satan

Bri, may I recommend Biotene dental chewing gum for dry mouth? They also make toothpaste and mouthwash for people with dry mouth. A little more expensive than your regular toothpaste and gum, but it might be worth it, and you can certainly afford it with the money you’re saving.

Sheesh! You’d think Scotty would have an extra set of dilithium crystals in his toolbox. But noooooo…
