As some of you know, it takes a lot to get me to post in MPSIMS.
This, however, is neither mundane nor pointless.
Brian, thanks for the thread.
Bucky, Ultress, Smug, Scylla, Delta-9, Nicky, Sue, et al, good luck and please accept my best wishes.
I’ve been a smoker since I was 14, as much as two packs a day, recently more like a half pack or so.
I went very nearly cold turkey on March 28th at 9:30 am. (I bought a box of gum, 2mg, but have chewed only a dozen pieces or so, in the first week) I was in hell for several days, but I’m feeling good about it finally.
I’m not alone. None of us are.
-andros- Two weeks
one day
4 hours
30 minutes
38 seconds.
182 cigarettes not smoked, saving $36.45.
Life saved: 15 hours, 10 minutes.
I smoked for over 25 years, two packs per day. I was so addicted that even though I work in a hospital where smoking is, of course, BANNED, I would always find ways. Even if I had to stand outside in minus 40 degrees (I swear it’s true). Even though I was the ONLY M.D. around who smoked, and was totally humiliated about it, I still needed to smoke. You can believe me when I say that Iwas totally addicted.
So, you should also believe me when I tell you that the cravings will pass. Just wait a bit. And, soon you will find that you have lots of time your hands. Had you ever wished that there were 25 hours in a day, or that you could get by on less sleep? Well, now you’re about to achieve the equivalent. You will have time to do more things. Almost like starting life over again. Keep it up Satan!
Wow! What great words of encouragement! This is so cool - I’m helping some people, and people are helping me! This is like a hippie commune or something!!
DAY FOUR
Today was not that good. The cravings really started to hit me and they never really went away. Even now, as I type, I wish I could smoke. I have to admit that I rummaged around under the sofa bed to see if maybe an unsmoked Marlboro fell back there. Fortunately, I didn’t find one. That would have sucked…
I hope tomorrow will be better. If I remember, days 3-7 were the worst - I have no idea why.
But I am not going to smoke… I am not going to smoke… I am not going to smoke… I am not going to smoke… But I am not going to smoke… I am not going to smoke… I am not going to smoke… I am not going to smoke…
Oh dude, I hope you can make it. Mayhaps you should surround yourself with stuff to remind you why you’re quitting.
Personal reasons (pics of loved ones, stuff like that)
Health reasons (posters with “the benefits list”, trac rings, hiking posters, whatever)
Frame the letter from Drain that says “no nookie for you if you smoke”.
And stuff like that.
I quit cold turkey like a year ago. I wish everyone who wanted to quit could do so the way I did…
I wish I could tell people that I had iron will and that I decided to quit and toughed it out. But I can’t, at least, not truthfully.
I just woke up one morning and did not want to smoke anymore. I got up, got ready, hopped in my car, started driving to work, lit a smoke, just like I had for the past thousand-some odd mornings… And nearly yacked. I tossed it out the window, gave the remainder of the pack to the will-work-for-____ guy at the on-ramp, and have not had smoke since.
It was like an act of God or something, “Thou shalt not smoke, asshole.”
I have even tried to start up again, you know drinking with the guys, ask a girl for a drag, and bleeeee-eeech! I can’t do it: no matter how hard I try, I can’t smoke even if I wanted to.
I wish everyone who wanted to quit smoking could have this happen to them.
Sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken.
Hang in there, oh evil one. You’re doin’ just dandy! We’re all cheering for you. Of course, this comes with a price: if you start again, we’re all gonna heave to come down (well, we’ll ask DB before we do) and kick your ass.

I haven’t smoked for maybe 10 years so the desire is completely gone. I still remember how tough it was to quit. I quit cold turkey, but it sounds like some good success so far with Zyban.
The thing I remember was how much I’d think “just one smoke.” What’s one smoke? I’ve been without for X days; what’s one little smoke. But you can’t do it, because it’s not one and you know it.
One thing I can say to people who are thinking of quitting: Do it now. I mean right now. Not after your next carton runs out, not at the beginning of the month, or after you get through this messy phase of your life. Right now. Take that thing out of your mouth and stop. Right now. Then it’s just one day at a time.
And what a great time, because you’ve got fellow-ex-tokers and supportive friends right here.
Brian:
Even half the money you’re saving by not smoking would pay for one heck of a honeymoon. And you’d be able to enjoy it more, too.
Good luck and great going so far.
Today was better for some reason. Even though I had more work to do, I was under less stress, or at least it didn’t manifest itself into wanting a cigarette. Much.
Anyway, I bought a Renuzit Aromasense candle today (Refreshing Sea Spray, it says) and it’s really nice. Makes my whole apartment smell nice. I am thinking of getting my carpet steam-cleaned, since I’ll bet when I really can smell it, my place will stink. Hey, maybe I can get my landlord to pay part of it? I’ll ask…
I know if I can just get through until next weekend when I will get to hold Libby in my arms, I’ll be able to do this all the way.
Everyone who has quit so far, keep it going… And if you’re thinking of quitting, come on by!
Oh, and check out the 3,000th post party I’m having! It’s BYOB, but in the non-smoking section for the first time in a long time!
Here’s the thing, I quit in September. I so want to encourage you all, it’s wonderful what you are doing for yourselves.
It’s hard but it will get easier. And besides you’ll be able to go around saying, “I have personally overcome an addiction more powerful than heroine!”
Do it ! Do it ! Do it!
You are strong, you are powerful, you are free!
Wisdom is the boobie prize, they give you when you’ve been --unwise!
I have nothing new to add, but felt like chiming in. For years, I have watched friends try again and again to quit. I can’t say I understand how hard it is (I have smoked exactly zero cigarettes in my entire life), but I can empathize. I look forward to reading this thread as more and more Dopers join the smoke-out.
Another thing if your a guy and smoke, it (Smoking) is the LEADING [#1] cause of impotence in middle aged and older men. And all (well most) of us guys like three things in life; to eat, sleep, and have sex.
So quit (or stay quit) from smoking to insure your monkey has good times down the road.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.
Satan you might want to dry clean or wash your clothes as well as your apartment. When I smoked, I couldn’t smell what my clothes and hair smelled like , but when I quit…the worst part was pulling out an outfit that still smelled like cigarette smoke. So if you haven’t already done so, you might want to do a laundry run.
Keep up the great job and congrats on your 3000th post.
