If the Repubs eventually nominate a candidate that is not Trump/Cruz, I see the Tea Party herd sitting out the election (at best) or Trump running a separate candidacy (at worst). If Trump or Cruz does win the election, many Repub moderates (and yes, they do exist) will probably sit this one out.
I fully agree with the first part. With regards to the second part, if Trump is the nominee I’m sure you are correct as well. What worries me is that you might be wrong about moderate conservatives sitting it out if Cruz wins the nomination. I think he’s smart enough to figure out a way to motivate them to show up for him, even in a general election.

Romney also thought likewise. Yeah, it is more complex than that, many independents did vote for Romney but he lost many moderates.
In 2012, a much more reliable indicator of success — and a better example of the “swing” vote — came from voters who identified as “moderate.” In every critical battleground state, Obama won the moderate vote. In Iowa, he captured more than 60% of it. Overall, Obama beat Romney by 15 points among moderates.
Now, thing is that Romney was seen a moderate choice for the republicans, but the primary run and the election showed many moderates that Romney may had run to the middle, but the primary had in reality pushed him too far to the right to convince many that he was Mr. moderate.
I don’t think that Cruz will fool the moderates, Cruz will lose many more moderates than Romney did in the general election.
He’s contacting his supporter in NH…
Wonder when Gilmore will have the sense to call it quits. I doubt he even has a supporter in NH to contact. If he calls a press conference to drop out, will anyone show up?
Other than possibly Gilmore, I think we won’t see any other dropouts before Iowa. After Iowa, Huckabee and Santorum might call it quits, because NH is less favorable territory for them than Iowa, so if they’re in the white noise in the Iowa voting, even they should realize it’s game over.
I’d expect Kasich, Paul, and Fiorina to drop out after NH unless they do well enough there to keep on going.
Carson will stay in until his support drops into the low single digits and stays there a few weeks.
Christie’s throwing everything he’s got into NH, so whether he keeps on going past NH depends on whether he does well enough there to raise new money.
Bush and Rubio stay in through Florida, no matter what. After that, it depends on whether they’ve got a chance at the nomination.
Cruz is in for the distance, and apparently so is Trump. I’d never believed that Trump really wanted to be the GOP nominee - that if push came to shove, he’d find a way to fail to win the nomination without looking bad while doing so. Now I’m not so sure.

He’s already tried that, and then when that didn’t work moved on to trying to fail while looking bad. And that hasn’t worked, either.
When Marco Rubio was majority whip of the Florida House of Representatives, he used his official position to urge state regulators to grant a real estate license to his brother-in-law, a convicted cocaine trafficker who had been released from prison 20 months earlier, according to records obtained by The Washington Post…
I’d say that’s about a 0.2 on the Marc Rich pardon scale.
In that the important thing to remember is that both sides do it. And anything Rubio may have done isn’t as bad as Hitler.
It’s obviously up to the judgement of the voters, but helping a family member get a real estate license by lobbying a regulatory board is barely even a misdemeanor. The way the Clintons used their executive power to help their friends and business associates was in a different galaxy of seriousness and caused bipartisan, universal revulsion. I can see why Democrats would want us to forget what they did(and yes, Hillary was intimately involved in that process since her brother got money from someone who wanted a pardon), but if we’re going to start talking about politicians doing favors for their friends, I don’t think many voters will judge Rubio harshly given how the Clintons abused the pardon process. That was pure legal corruption of the most blatant kind.
The difference is that the Rubio news is fresh information for voters whereas all the Clinton stuff is decades old.
Ultimately, the impact will depend on whether Teh Donald picks up on it as a way to kneecap one of his rivals. The original source is fairly obvious, what with the distinct aroma of turd blossom surrounding the sudden appearance of the story.

Oh, jeez, is he running this year too?
IMHO, Rubio’s attempt to use his influence to get his BIL (Orlando Cicilia) a real estate license without mentioning that the person he was endorsing was related to him is small potatoes, compared to WTF IS ANY REASONABLE PERSON DOING, TREATING THIS GANGSTER LIKE FAMILY???
Seriously, Cicilia was a major player (out of the $75M of cocaine and dope they sold, $15M had Cicilia’s name on it) in a drug-running criminal syndicate that killed two people for being informants, including the wife of the top dog, Mario Tabraue, and hacked the other guy’s body to pieces with a machete and a chainsaw. And when Tabraue and Cicilia were indicted, convicted, and sent to prison for long stretches, Rubio’s sister Betty remained married to Cicilia, and when he got out, Rubio’s parents took him into their home, and so after all the major crime this guy committed, and the even worse company he hung out with (and apparently didn’t rat on), they sang a rousing chorus, of “consider yourself at home, consider yourself part of the family.”
Seriously, after years of conservatives trying to make a big deal about Obama’s tenuous connections with Saul Alinsky and Bill Ayers, HERE’S RUBIO INCLUDING A FUCKING DRUG LORD IN THE BOSOM OF HIS FAMILY. You folks on the right had better be fucking outraged, that’s all I’ve got to say.
Don’t think Kasich calling himself an “impatient rascal” is really going to help him.

I think voters can judge substance over freshness, especially when the difference in behavior is such a vast gulf. Besides, it never hurts to remind voters who were old enough to remember just how disgusted they were and how angry that they couldn’t do anything about it. Clinton’s candidacy is a blessing in that respect: now we can punish them for what they did.

You can’t choose your family, and ne’er do well family members are a staple of Presidencies, the Clintons included. And it’s not as if Bill has been above getting his relatives(and ex-lovers) jobs.
Now I suppose you could play the “threatening Latino with a cocaine dealer in the family” card, but I don’t think liberals have the balls, frankly.

Uh, he did play it, and as a Latino I say the card is well played, as I do not think your Trump like “they all do” ‘have cocaine dealers in their families’ will fly. Most Hispanics still follow the law even if several Republicans do not believe it.
Yeah, but this idea that we abandon and disown family when they do bad things seems to be uniquely WASPish.

I’m so out-of-touch I’d not heard of that story until you posted. At first I thought yours was some sort of parody. … And – no surprise – the link that surfaced via Google was to a British news story, not American.
If it were the b-inlaw of Hillary’s hairdresser instead of Rubio’s b-il that was the drug dealer, the story would have blared all other news off the front pages.
There’s already more than enough on her brothers as it is. You really don’t want us exploring Clinton cousins and ethics.
