Previously they made the worlds first human clones!!! (ok they can’t show any proof becuase it would infringe on the clones privacy, but hey, theyre reasonable people so we’ll believe them)
So immortality is assured, get old then clone yourself. But now you won’t have to even do that!. The Raelians have created the elixir of Youth!!
It irritates me how successfully these people manipulate the press, and the idiot press basically bends over for them.
But, I have to give them credit for adding a hint of scientific plausibility behind their bullshit claims. They aren’t claiming that Zardon from planet Jamooka gave them the secret to eternal life; they say they developed it themselves from stem cells.
Still Dejamoo though (to coin someone’s sig) When it comes time to front up with the research/proof etc I’m sure they’ll have a plethora of reasons why they can’t stump it up. Same old BS we had about the clones
The Raelians are out of their minds, and their claims about producing advanced bio-technology are non-scientific and, most likely, utterly false. That said, the existence of these loonies doesn’t mean that cloning, anti-aging treatments, drastic life-extension, and human enhancement aren’t coming. This world of ours is about to change very quickly whether we like it or not. These issues are not laughable, even if the Realians are. As a matter of fact, these issues are so important, IMO, that to put off ethics and legal discussions until the technology actually arises is to tempt fate and disaster.

The above quotes are from this article, which I think sums up the likely progression of these technologies quite well (assuming we don’t blow everything to hell or get ravaged by bio-terrorism first). Ray is a futurist, and he uses existing trends and numbers to project what the future will bring. He is fascinated by the law of accelerating returns as applied to science and technology. That is, the more tech advances, the faster the next wave (or “new paradigm”) of changes come. So in the last 100 years we advanced as much as we had in the last 1,000. And in the next 10 years we’ll make advances comparable to those made in the last 100 years. He makes some compelling arguments for exponential growth in technological abilities. Whether this exponential growth can continue remains to be seen, but as of this post there seems to be no slowing down.
Currently, the average life expectancy (ALE) rises something like 1 year / per 10 years. The current LE is around 85 years. That means, that for myself - a 27 year old, assuming current rate increases in LE remain steady, that by the time I am 85 the average life expectancy will be 91. So that means, on average, guys like myself should die around 91.5 years old. No good. The problem with this math is that it does not factor in the increase in the rate of change. While we now increase the ALE by a factor of 1yr/10yrs this was not always the case. The average life span in the U.S. has increased by 50 percent over the last 100 years alone. Once we get the ALE to go up by 1yr/yr, we are on the verge of a practical immortality. There is no reason to assume this increase in the rate of change will not continue. Even after we get to the point where we can expand the ALE 1yr/yr, the advances should continue. So ultimately we add 2yrs/yr, then 4, then 8, and so on and so on. And all of this is assuming that current trends continue in a straight line (on an exponential chart). There may very well be some tremendous new paradigm that leapfrogs the current rates and makes ALE’s a better record of accidental deaths (as we will most likely achieve the ability to restore and “de-age” the human body making LEs indefinite).
The above are specific cases of drastic life extension in non-human creatures. We share most of our DNA with these creatures and similar technologies for humans are not that far off. Just do a google search on “anti-aging research” and find hour and hours of fascinating reading. Billions are being spent on this field (as well as related fields - i.e nanotech) every year. These changes are coming. To laugh off these issues as fanciful delusions by default is a big mistake (laughing at the Raelians is fine, however). Once these technologies are in place, humanity is going to have some serious issues to deal with. Including but not limited to:
Population:
When people stop dieing the world will fill up pretty quick. We have a finite amount of space and resources on this planet. We will have to expand into space or limit the amounts of births (whether through self-regulation or legal enforcement). Already the worlds food supplies are looking at falling drastically short of being able to maintain current populations if we don’t make a move to increase grain and rice yields (through genetic engineering). These are thorny issues and people who are starving will go to war to not starve.
Availability
Depending on the price of the drugs/treatments that facilitate these advancements they may be widely available or available only to the rich. If the rich get to live, and the poor have to die, expect a war. The tech must be given to all or none or else we risk dramatic conflict.
Crime and Punishment
How do you sentence someone to a life sentence who isn’t going to die? We’ll have to rethink our whole legal systems when lifespans are dramatically altered. If someone spends 100 years in prison are they really going to be able to function when released?
These are no small issues. While these advancements have the potential to raise us to a level free from pain and death, they also have the potential to rip apart the fabric of our civilizations and plunge us into war and strife. We need to be aware, we need to talk about these things, and we need to prepare for their inevitable arrival. Far too often people just shrug and go “Yeah, right.” when I tell them about the advances likely to occur over the next 30 years. Your average person does not suspect that a fountain of youth is possible, never mind likely in the next 30 years. But one need only read the daily science journals to realize that billions of dollars and our best minds are not only trying to solve these issues, but they are having success. A strange new world is coming indeed. Don’t be caught unawares!
That’s great dalovindj, but the OP was about Raelians, who, lets face it, can’t even handle the amazing technology of Flash graphics, much less that of recombinant DNA.
Maybe I’ve just been sitting in front of a computer screen for too long this week, but I was thinking that would be a great name for their Elixer of Youth …Stem-Aid.
Those who thought the earth was round when it was considered flat were ostracized too. I myself will wait and see before judging. The media attention doesn’t bother me, it makes things interesting.
PA You’re kidding, right? Ya know that kid in elementary school who said that scar was from a shark bite? He’s got 10x the credibility of these jerkoffs.
