The reign of King Charles III of the United Kingdom

I assume the Regency Act would take effect and the next in line would become Prince/Princess Regent until such time as the monarch were declared legally dead.

Well, last time it happened the Saxons conquered the country. But he might still come back!

The watery bint must be a mite tired by now.

So, a royal funeral is not inevitable?

It’s safe to say that we have not seen the last royal funeral.

That’s what the French aristocracy said in 1788…

They could just have a royal Celebration of Life instead.

Prince William Sparks Debate With Comments on His Christian Faith

Unless he’s had his fatal car accident before that.

Well, … there’s banished and then there’s Banished!

Will no one rid me of this turbulent uncle?

It leaves the impression that he does not really consider himself a Christian, but knows that he must keep this semi-veiled.

We’re talking about the Church of England here: that could cover plenty of its clergy too, not to mention the bulk of the rest of society.

I dunno, reminds me of all the “Obama’s really a closet atheist” nonsense. You can just not be a doctrinaire type, or be uneasy with performativevpiety, or reasonably be thinking “come on, do we really want to keep pretending it’s 1689 just for the chance at fancy-dress events, pretty sure God has better things to care about.”

Yup. The common folks heavily into performative piety really demand that of their church hierarchy. And get pissy when they don’t see enough of it.

Would that we could drag those folks forward a couple millennia into the actual world we & they inhabit.

Well, they should probably try to come up with a system where their religious leaders get selected on the basis of their religiosity, rather than by inheritance, then.

If they lived in a theocracy they probably would.

The whole royalty plus established church thing is of course ridiculously ancient, primitive, and anti-democratic. And hence anti-human. Replacing all that would offer many different outcomes.

But discussion within the confines of that established system leads to different conclusions.

Agreed, hereditary nobility and established churches are both terrible ideas, and combining them doesn’t improve matters one bit.

“You got king on my pope!”

“Well, you got pope on my king!”

I can’t fathom that he’s coming to see Trump’s Military Parade on July 4th.

The British certainly know military parading. Or will Hegseth & Trump go for the Goose Step? Decisions, decisions.

Trump might actually try to have a long enough attention span to await the Ballistic Missiles on flatbeds at the back of the parade. Putin (or his ceremonial double) definitely did.

Parliament really needs to step in and cancel this visit.

It’s not up to the King; he really has no decision making power in this.

Of course, he could come down with a medical “something” that would prevent his travel. Face saving all around.

He’s not. His visit is later this month.

And while obviously awkward in its timing, it’s not inconceivable that the British government could yet turn this visit to its advantage. The reason - the 1776 anniversary – could actually work in their favour. The speeches the King will give will be drafted by the Foreign Office. Those can easily be filled with platitudes about the enduring bonds between the two nations. But in the current circumstances, those will seem very two-edged. Classy and yet subtlely pointed would be the perfect combination. And thus very unTrump-like. The best outcome would be if everyone, except Trump, gets the message that the Brits can take the extremely long-term view.
