The King hosts his first state banquet at Buckingham Palace
Unsurprising, but still appalling.
Even more appalling is the press mocking their concerns and calling them liars.
Two bits of Royal news:
And this:
Bad news:
Bad for whom? Chuckie will still be on coins and the bill will feature an indigenous design. How is this not a great change?
Seems like progress to me.
I will note that various articles have said that the relevant Australian authorities had said a couple of years ago that whenever Elizabeth died, they’d be making this change.
So the timing of the change has arrived now as a consequence of Liz’s death. But the decision about making the change was made a long time ago, not as a consequence of Charles’ reign.
Unrelated to any personal merit (or lack) of Charles as monarch, it seems clear to me that he (and his immediate successor) will be witnesses to the republic-ification of most if not all of the remaining non-UK realms. And perhaps the partial dissolution of the UK proper.
Ultimately these things are not in his (or his successor’s) remit to control. At best they can hasten or delay matters to the degree their clownishness or conversely their gravitas serves to either put the issue on the front burner in those countries or to push it back to the back burner.
As it was, Elizabeth convinced the Commonwealth Nations to accept Charles as the head of the Commonwealth after she passed. There’s really no reason the UK monarch has to be the head of the Commonwealth, especially since some members are republics.
Which is unrelated to the story from Australia, which is a Commonwealth Realm, as opposed to simply a member of the Commonwealth. As long as they remain a Realm, they accept whichever monarch is also Monarch of the UK.
Of course no one, Charles included, expects them to remain so for that much longer.
I wonder what Canada plans to do?
FWIW, the monarch’s image didn’t appear on British notes until 1960. Nothing to get worked up about.
As I understand it, becoming a republic means opening the Constitution which means Quebec and / or Alberta and / or Indigenous peoples will make demands that will end Canada, so we’re keeping the monarchy. The U.K. pays for most of it anyway, and we only use the top dog: no Prince of Gatineau or Duchess of Whistler here.
I would love to be the Duke of Whistler. I would rule my tiny kingdom from my snow fortress high on the slopes of the mountain. All would worship my snowboarding prowess!
would you whistle incessantly?
And would they despair?
Previous thread on topic:
TLDR: It’s difficult.
Hmm… Lord Euphonious, Duke Polemic of Whistler … has a ring to it.
But would that include associated lower titles and titles for heirs, like Marquis of Kicking Horse, Viscount of Revelstoke and Baron of Comox Valley?
Those are a bit far away.
Baron of Blackcomb. Earl of Squamish. Marquis of Garibaldi.
We joke, but if there were a Peerage Of Canada they could make a crapton of titles with all that territory…
