The reign of King Charles III of the United Kingdom

Meet the original jazz bagpiper, Rufus Harley.

Why life and not hereditary?

Because Edward and his kids are getting increasingly far away from the succession, and Edinburgh has one of the titles that traditionally stays in the close Royal Family.

Nope, not jazz. The variations are all set out in the pibroch.

More like the Goldberg Variations.

Two thoughts:

First, Charles’ notion of a “slimmed-down royal family” may lead him to want to limit the number of royal dukes. Edward is the brother of the king, but his son will be successively nephew of the king, first cousin of the king, first cousin once removed of the king. Charles may think that’s a bit too remote from the throne to warrant a dukedom.

Secondly, Edward choice has consistently been to give his children a certain distance from the fullness of royal panoply. His son could be styled HRH the Prince James of Edinburgh but he never has been; he uses the style of the son of a duke, and the courtesy title Lord Wessex. Similarly his daughter is Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, rather than HRH the Princess Louise of Edinburgh. Making the dukedom non-heritable is consistent with this approach.

He’s a dead ringer for his brother.

Harry accepted his invitation, Meghan is staying at home with the kids.

I hope I hear precious little of Harry on coronation day. It isn’t about him, but somehow the press will make it so.

Almost … the press will make it look like he’s trying to make it all about him.

Right. Outrage if he doesn’t show. Outrage if he shows up.

Here’s the actual text, from a church in Hornsey, Middlesex:

If that to ring you do come here
You must ring well with hand and ear
If that you ring in spur or hat
A quart of Ale must pay for that
Andf if a bell you overthrow
Sixpence is due before you go
And if you curse or swear, I say
A shilling’s due without delay
And if you quarrill in this place
You shall not ring in any case

Some interesting stuff here, I thought:

Princess Betty and Veronica are not amused… :duck: & :running_man:t4:

Speculative twaddle.

TIL about the King’s pups:

Private Eye’s take on the great day :-

"Having a monarchy next door is a little like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and has daubed their house with clown murals, displays clown dolls in each window and has an insatiable desire to hear about and discuss clown-related news stories. More specifically, for the Irish, it’s like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and, also, your grandfather was murdered by a clown” - Irish Times

Now that’s just mean. Accurate, but mean.

I still have the “Woman Has Baby” issue somewhere.

Ha! And see:
