The Republican national Convention

I’ve seen approving comments about the text. Odds that it’ll be delivered as written?

ETA: my prediction is that it’ll be solidly “meh.” No huge fireworks, nothing that rouses a big surge in his image for good or ill. May even be a bit boring.

Circus lady? I think you’ll have to be more specific - the whole thing is a circus!

Okay. I’m curious. And possibly naive. On what basis do elementary school teachers (or anyone else) despise Michelle Obama, and more than Barack and Hillary combined at that?

A lot of it is inchoate (though we can guess at their inner motivations). But she got treated to a nearly daily griping sesh, at lunchtime, about how Michelle had “ruined” school lunches.

A few random musings before Mr. Trump comes out and tells us once again how scary the world is and how lucky we are to have someone like him protecting us from it:

  1. Nearly all the stuff the press has been playing up as representing a ‘chaotic’ convention (Melaniagate, Ted Cruz and his best Snively Whiplash imitation, state delegations in a snit over obscure parlaimentary rules, goofy speakers and strange scheduling) doesn’t amount to a hill of beans and will be forgotten 48 hours after this thing is over. A ticket has been successfully nominated; the stage didn’t collapse and no one’s hair caught on fire. That’s really all that counts. Only political junkies like me will give much of a shit about the rest.

  2. There’s been a lot of gum-flapping about what wonderful kids Mr. Trump has, and how well they’ve carried themselves, how they should go into politics themselves, yadda yadda yadda. Our resident Trump cheerleader even referred to one of them as “Kennedyesque”. Hey, I won’t argue, but all they suggest to me is that it indeed seems possible to be a colossal douchebag and a decent parent after all (especially when you’ve got a few hundred million to throw around on their upbringing).

  3. For me the absolute low point of the entire week was Chris Christie’s spot-on imitation of a Soviet-era show trial, complete with howling mob. Not because I feel compelled to defend Hillary Clinton’s reputation in any way (I’m nowhere near her biggest fan) but for the spectacle of a person who has worked as a goddam federal prosecutor pissing all over the basic principles of our justice system in such an egregious manner. Is this how he conducted business when it was his actual job? I sincerely doubt he would have gotten away with anything like that shit. If anything shows just how fascistic the people in Trump’s orbit are, this was it. I can only hope he fades away to a well-deserved irrelevance.

OK, that’s enough ranting, back to the circus; head clown’s due up soon.

So here is the leaked transcript:

Full text: Donald Trump 2016 RNC draft speech transcript - POLITICO.

Its a “great” speech… Or it must be, judging by how many times that word is used.

I just assumed that he was auditioning for Attorney General, since he didn’t get the veep slot. I’d bet even money that he gets it, if Trump wins <shudder>.

I don’t know SlackerInc’s friend, but in certain circles, everyone hates Michelle Obama for trying to force children to eat healthy food. The way they carry on, you’d think she was nailing their feet to the floor and shoving kale down their gullets.

And yes, the subtext is pretty clear, although the text is always stated as, “how dare The Government tell me what to eat!!”

Has any candidate had as many family members speak at a convention? Tonight Ivanka becomes the 4th Trump spawn to speak, plus we had the potential First Lady/Plagarizer a few nights ago.

That’s 5!!

Did even one of the Kennedys have such a nepotistic convention?

Ok I’ve been just browsing the thread and not really paying much attention to the RNC in general but my parents are watching it out in the living room and I have a question. Who the HELL was on just now that was screaming and yelling at the top of his lungs about the promised land?? I have no idea what he was talking about and I was still really disturbed hearing someone get that worked up in a speech.

I don’t know who that was, but Rep Blackburn (speaking a few minutes ago) just used a Larry the Cable Guy reference. As if we had any question what intelligence level they are targeting.

I think all will be fine-- so long as Donald stays on script. Ivanka seems far too smart to fall into the unprepared trap like other family members. Trump is a wild card, though. Sometimes his salesman instinct takes over. He smells the crowd is right in his palm and he plays to that. Starts “shooting from the hip”. It usually goes over well with the cheering crowd but does not play well on national news.

He’s savvy enough to know to play it safe but egotistical enough to want to seize his moment.

“I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end. Beginning on January 20th 2017, safety will be restored…”

… when you buy Trump steaks. Folks, these are the BEST steaks for you. Really, really great when used with my Made In China linen napkins. The best linen napkins…

He might settle for AG, but I think he is actually auditioning for Scalia 2.0

OMG. You mean Christie thinks Trump might nominate him to the Supreme Court?

The black guy? Pastor Mark Burns is his name. I was pissed because my TV reception was crapping out (antenna woohoo!) and really interrupting the crazy for me.

All Lives Matter! Even Muslim lives! screeedeech

This is part of why these people irritate me so much. If I said anything even resembling some of the shit that comes out of their mouths, I would be fired on the spot. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, get out, you’re done. And yet these people can stand in front of America and say the most bigoted, hateful, racist, untrue, nonsensical, fascistic bullshit and people literally cheer for them. I’m at a loss.

This is a successful business woman, and good for her. Seriously, well done! But how can someone as smart and capable as her possibly believe that over 50% of millennials can all be successful entrepreneurs, regardless of tax rates or regulations? She has to know better than that. Economies just don’t work that way. Businesses need employees. If 50% of the population own businesses than the other 50% will work for them. That means 1 employee per business!

Yes, some of those businesses could be one person concerns with no employees. But even if half of these new businesses fit that description (which seems unlikely, and doesn’t really fit my idea of “successful” anyway) that would leave an average of two employees each for the remaining businesses. And that’s ignoring the currently existing businesses, especially the large corporations that employee thousands. There would be a massive labor shortage, which would increase wages dramatically and destroy most of those new businesses.

The idea that everyone can be a successful entrepreneur, if we only lower taxes and regulations, is a pipe dream.

I suspect also that what really, really pisses of a lot of Michelle Obama’s non-supporters is that deep down they are aware she has been a freakin’ fantastic first lady. Has she put a single foot wrong? I can’t think where. She has been by turns sensible, wise, motherly, fun, a good mum, classy etc. And that really hurts if you desperately wanted her to fail.

I laughed out loud at Reince Preibus’ description of the Iran deal. And I’m the only one here!
