One of those voting against was Representative Jess Edwards, whose comments sparked immediate gasps from colleagues.
“… If we continually restrict the freedom of marriage as a legitimate social option, when we do this to people who are a ripe, fertile age and may have a pregnancy and a baby involved, are we not, in fact, making abortion a much more desirable alternative, when marriage might be the right solution for some freedom-loving couples?” he said.
I heard some asshole republican on POTUS today (only for about 10 minutes) say that he refuses to pay for abortions. His other complaint was that women are deliberately getting pregnant so the ‘state’ will support them. I had to turn it off, I was driving.
However, with the ever-present dysfunction of Congress, maybe predictably, the program has been stalled. Some Republicans, refusing to give Biden a “win,” voted against the renewal of funding.
Even though this would be a win for all Americans – and humanity – it apparently did not outweigh the politics of making a Democrat look good. This is the definition of party over country.
Well, Trump has often been called “a cancer on America”, so, of course, they’d vote against this. You don’t want the government standing between you and your oncologist, after all.
And no doubt they dream of burning witches, conveniently ignoring the fact that Salem witches were hanged or in one case pressed to death. It was those effete Europeans who burned witches at the stake.
Sadly nothing about that surprises me. Conservatives have long used sex related issues as a wedge to separate people. Sex is a natural human function. It feels good and it’s fun, because nature both wants us to procreate and it serves as a pair bonding activity, which encourages close knit communities. In conservatives addled, selfish, hateful , hypocritical thinking anything that encourages fun or self liberation is evil. Because control is there ultimate aim. People can’t be allowed to do anything with their own bodies without their say so, and that goes regardless of which side of the camera you’re on.
I’m sure it feeds some way into their evident hatred for women’s bodies/freewill and healthcare as well. People can’t be allowed autonomy over their own bodies. It’s a pattern.
I can’t help but think when I read things like this that Trump and his closest allies are going to overreach again, win or lose. Not a guarantee, of course, and not something to be tested, but this level of huffing one’s own fumes has to raise an eyebrow.
Which is interesting, because Puritans were apparently fine with sex, just not sex outside of marriage. So they’d presumably have some points of disagreement with modern conservatives. And abortion was fairly common-even Ben Franklin included an abortion aid in one of his books.
