I was just skimming this and at first assumed the epithet in question was “racist”. It is not constructive to call other people racist based on an unchangeable characteristic, but neither is it constructive to declare that you, or America, like Scott did, is not racist. Both are overly simplified declarations that imply that any further growth or self-reflection is either unnecessary or useless.
If they could just go ‘racist lite’ and shift the focus on demonizing agnostic progressives, they’d probably recruit a lot of people across several demographics. I’m not going to be their cornerman, though, lol.

Apparently Tim Scott has forgotten the speech he gave a few years ago on the Senate floor about all of the times he had been asked by the Capitol police to show id before entering the Senate building. He seemed aware at the time that racism existed. I wonder what changed.
Yeah, they’re between a rock and a hard place. If they ever stop demonizing the urban poor, they may win some minority voters but they’ll cost themselves at least that many among their older white base, which is extremely galvanized by the cries of “shithole inner cities run by Demoncrats.”

Interestingly, Kamala Harris was asked to weigh in on the remarks, and said that, “Well, first of all, no, I don’t think America is a racist country,” before going on to add that “we also do have to speak truth about the history of racism in our country and its existence today.”
Harris and Biden had to walk a fine line. If you say “America is a racist country” you’re doing a disservice to those who are not. I don’t think a majority of Americans are racist, but there are significant numbers who are, we see it in policing, and we see that millions are either racist or who not care if their candidate is. I think the only way to answer the question is to say that most Americans are not racist, but far too many are and they have far too much power and abuse it.
I’ve never liked this argument, though. Because where are those older white people going to go? It’s not like they’ll suddenly start voting Democrat, or something.
Worst case scenario, for every minority vote they pick up, one “old white” vote either stays home, or votes for some fringe party the never wins. But if most of those minority votes would have gone Democratic, they still improve their relative standings.
Let’s say there’s a district that went Dem in the previous election, so the results were Dem 48%, Rep 46%, Fringe 6%. If the Reps can move 3% worth of Dem votes to Rep, while 3% of Rep votes go to Fringe, the next election is Rep 46%, Dem 45%, Fringe 9%, and the Reps win.
Simple. The only way for advancement in the GOP is through evil.
The GOP strategy of “what if we didn’t?” now encompasses “doing what the majority voted for”:
