Nice
When you sup with the Devil use a long spoon. There ain’t no spoon long enough in this case.
Also don’t forget Reagan’s immortal quote about “the eleventh commandment…Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican.” Even the ones who have a modicum of decency still don’t want to speak out too much, lest they lose what power they have, which makes it harder for them to enact more tax cuts, deregulation, and gutting of social services, which remain key priorities even for the good 'uns.
Yeah, although if your party marches with Nazis and tries to topple the government, at some point you have to walk away or admit you’re one of them.
At least I understand why Republican politicians stay and try to fix their party. What baffles me is normal people, people on this board, who cling to being Republicans – why? If the NY Giants decided to try and topple our democracy, I would no longer be a Giants fan. Why stay a Republican if when they do so many terrible things?
I’m registered as a Democrat so I can vote in the primaries, but my allegiance to the Democratic Party is about as weak as an allegiance can be.
Me too, I can honestly say that I would not stay with the democrats if they acted like the GOP. But as a Washington Nationals fan, I’m pretty sure it was the Phillies who tried to topple our democracy.
I will reach aross the aisle to bring about consensus, claiming it was the f****** Yankees.
Well yeah
It confuses me too as I know people that with Trump seem to double down.
I had left way back with the evil known as Cheney. Trump completely blows my mind and lets face it, there is no excuse for anyone in NY/NJ to have had anything but derision for that buffoon. We all knew who this ass was. That he proved to be worse is frightful.
I’ll add that a political party is not something a voter owes allegiance to, but instead the reverse, a political party owes allegiance to their voters. The Republican Party stopped serving my needs, so I am no longer a Republican. The Democratic Party isn’t a great fit, but they use facts and love the America we have, so here I am.
Actually I can vote in the Primaries as an independent. Each time I do this, it auto registers me as a Dem. I can then download a form, fill it out and go back to being an Indy. Why do I do this? I’m not even sure. Maybe some residual nod to Lincoln, Roosevelt and Ike.
Yeah, I can do that, but why bother. If the Democrats go off the deep end, it’s easy enough to change to Indy or Republican or whatever.
Between his shenanigans in Atlantic City and his shenanigans in NYC, it’s surprising he got any votes in the area. That guy was known as a con artist from way back.
On the first part, I’m not sure why I resist joining the Dems. I like the tag of no party or Indy better I guess. But it is admittingly a little weird and silly.
As to the second, seriously, you couldn’t live in this area and not know what a phony he was and bullshit artist.
Some people like that.
They just think that he is bullshitting those other people over there, but would never bullshit them.
For so many people, they have absorbed the message that Democrats are non-human evil. And as bad as the GOP gets, in their minds, switching to the Dems would be equivalent to (and horrific to them) as getting a sex change.
This certainly seems to be the case with some Republicans that I know. These are intelligent, accomplished people–doctors, lawyers, business owners. They will all, to a person, gladly admit that Donald Trump is an idiot, that he’s incredibly crude, incredibly corrupt, and never had any business being anywhere near the Presidency.
And yet they all voted for him, twice, and will vote for him again if he runs in 2024. Because as far as they’re concerned, a Democrat–any Democrat–would be infinitely worse.
I can’t understand it.
I spoke with one who explained — on her own initiative, not in response to anything I’d asked — “I think he’s an idiot, but I like his policies.”
(I made sure to write that down at the time, thinking I might someday want to relay it word-for-word; but, moving for a moment from 100% accuracy to mere extrapolation, I’d wager that today she’d gladly express that same sentiment while swapping in “Supreme Court picks”.)
Same here. I had thought of myself as a Republican up till GW. I voted for him the first time but then switched and have voted mostly Democratic since. I wish I would’ve switched sooner, but I was still young and stupid. Most of the Trump supporters I know are older and stupid.
So we’re back to the face-eating leopards.
It’s tribalism, straying into full-on cult mentality. They know that the Republicans are terrible, but their worldview relies on the Democrats always being worse, no matter what. And as the GOP have descended more and more into outright lying, corruption, criminality and sedition and continue to undermine the rule of law and democracy, they have accordingly adjusted their view of what Democrats must be like in order for them to be even worse. The Liberal Strawmen just get bigger and uglier and more fearsome as the actual GOP gets more deranged.
And so not only do we get “Hillary Clinton is selling children for sex slavery and/or slaughter out of a pizza place basement”, an increasing number of them – including certain members of this very messageboard – are just left spouting incoherent word salads about “Wokism!” and “Antifa!” that don’t even make sense. Most of them can’t actually articulate or evidence their views, but they know in their hearts that the Left are Very Very Bad and that everyone else would see it too if they just stopped watching CNN and Did Their Own Research.
Because the alternative would be to admit that the “libtards” have been right all along and they’ve been gullible idiots believing obvious lies who have been supporting the bad guys all along.
