Texas woman charged with murder for ‘self-induced abortion’
We really need to have a separate special thread just for Texas political atrocities. (I posted this same story, and this same comment, in another thread – I think it was SRIOTD2.) Maybe we should also have a special thread for Florida political atrocities.
ETA: Yeah, here it is:
You’d have to have a thread for Florida and another for Missouri, too. Maybe Idaho.
Oh, most definitely Idaho needs to be included.
I say this as a 72 year old Idaho native.
As a 37 year Idaho resident, I support this message.
We need an entire matrix of threads for political atrocities in all the red and reddish states.
I suggest one thread, called “Hold My Beer: Republicans Outdoing Each Other”.
Kelly Tshibaka, Trump’s endorsed candidate against AK Sen Lisa Murkowski, says she wants to make it a federal crime to send birth control and abortion pills through the mail.
Condoms too?
And literature describing birth control methods.
In the “sometimes there’s good news” sense, the DA won’t prosecute.
"A Texas district attorney announced in a statement on Sunday that he will file a motion to dismiss the indictment against Lizelle Herrera, the 26-year-old woman who attracted national attention after being arrested on Thursday and charged with murder after authorities said she “caused the death of an individual by self-induced abortion.”
Good to hear for Ms. Herrera. Unfortunately, I get the distinct sense that the charges were only dropped because the Starr County DA doesn’t want to have to put up with the shitstorm that was preparing to rain down regarding this. Another woman in another county may not be so lucky.
Is the bail money refunded in such a case?
I would suspect so, but I’m imagining that she didn’t really cough up that money. Half a million, wasn’t it?
Why so much?
Oh boy, why are people asking me questions about this bail? I had nothing to do with it. What I know is that you usually have to come up with 10 percent, if you want to be unlocked.
10% down for most. You get most of it back, a bit like a payday loan. It was so high because the charge was murder, 500k was probably the minimum based on the charge. [The judge may have been a dick too but let’s go with minimum.]
I think the abortion-rights outfit that organized those protests also coughed up the bail money.
I wonder if there are some lawsuits waiting in the wings over this. Can she sue the sheriff or whoever it was that indicted her? The news I read said that the indictment didn’t even specify what law was violated. Can a sheriff indict and arrest someone on any old whim and not even say what law was broken? Do we have a false arrest lawsuit here?
Also, I read that the sheriff got notified of the event by the hospital she went to. Is there some confidentiality or federal HIPAA violation there? Is there a state law that makes the hospital a mandatory reporter in cases like this? Is there a lawsuit against the hospital waiting here?
Can someone add a rider that also bans sending vasectomies via the mail?
I’m just interested to see if they spot the problem…
This was just brought up in P&E but I felt it belongs here too? Jared “Not Yet A Real Boy” Kushner received investment from Saudis.
