Yeah the old cannard about “When facism comes to america it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross” needs to be retired. Fascism came, it barely made any attempt to be remotely religious or patriotic, it just said a bunch of facist stuff, and America (or a large enough percentage of America) loved it.

Hell, the flag and the cross have been made subordinate to the non-ideology of Rule By The Meanest. The people who softened the ground for it did come wrapped in the flag and cross, conservative populists, but their problem was that just as long as you were there behind them to (cut taxes/repeal Roe) they chose to not notice your long knives.
And I gotta say this, reminded by a today-on-history item last week: at the very least the OG Fascists called a meeting and kicked Benito’s ass to the curb when it became obvious he was badly losing them the war. Ours still feel they’re on the verge of winning bigly.
