The Riches series premiere 12 Mar '07 (spoikers)

I’ve been looking forward to this for a couple months. I like Minnie Driver, though it’s weird watching her with a hillbilly accent.

Haven’t watched it yet, but it looks pretty good (and Eddie Izzard picked the project over a role in 24, so that instills a little confidence!)

This does look good. I didn’t realize form the previews that they were actual Travellers. I though gypsy was just being used as a synonym for con artist.

Hadn’t heard about this until I read about it today in Entertainment Weekly. They liked it. It sounds unusual enough to be interesting. The Tivo is set!

Outstanding!

OK, I’m going with the critic who said the pilot episode is a little uneven. I liked it, but there was an awful lot to cover in one episode and I’m not sure I got it all, so I’m hoping the next couple episodes fill me in. I think the daughter was excellent. Izzard’s and Driver’s accents weren’t bad (hers was better than his.) I think this is a little more grim than I was expecting, though I did know going in that it was a drama.

Speculation please: What was the deal with the neighbor lady who spotted the cash in the cushion? Does she know they’re imposters, and is playing along, or is she just thinking they’re eccentric or something?

Neighbor lady is also a drug addict, but she’s the upper middle class prescription kind.

Not at all what I was expecting.

I was expecting something more along the lines of “The Beverly Hillbillies”, except not as broad and with the added twist that Jed’s a lying weasel desperate to keep Mr. Drysdale from learning that he knows the lyrics to Dueling Banjos.

This was actually pretty grim. It’ll be interesting to see how this shifts out.

I think it looks pretty promising. I really enjoyed it and not at all what I expected.

So she’s figuring Dahla’s secrets are on par with her own, and implicitly agreeing “I won’t tell aboout yours, you don’t tell about mine”?

I thought it was brilliant. It’ll be interesting to see how long they can pull off the big scam. And any excuse to watch Eddie Izzard is good enough for me. I’m also glad it’s not on network tv where it would probably be canceled after 3 episodes for not pulling in good enough ratings (I’m looking at you, ABC. I’m still bitter about “Daybreak”.).

Damn. I liked it. I’ve never seen Izzard in anything but his comedy. Didn’t know he could act. I liked the kids too. And Gregg Henry makes a good villain.

There are a lot of ways they could go with this. The last pilot I saw that presented characters this well was Deadwood.

Lots to think about. Looking forward to next week.

This is definitely a cool idea. Very dramatic but also darkly funny (I guess that’s why they call it a black comedy) like a few of fx’s shows.
I like the family, but am not sure how well this will work out for them. Are the kids going to go to school? I see problems with past school references, I’m such a buffer I guess. What about his work, won’t he need a SSN?

More than that She had a lock pick and raked the front door to let her “Mrs. Rich” back in

We just watched the show. I thought it was good, but as LifeOnWry mentioned, it was a bit “uneven”. There is a lot of stuff that was crammed into the pilot episode.

I am looking forward to the episode next Monday.

I really like Eddie Izzard. I was hooked on his stand-up, but I have seen some of his ither non-comedy work- he really has great acting talent.

I love Eddie Izzard and have been impressed with his acting before (The Cat’s Meow), but he was compelling in this, just a pleasure to watch. In fact, it was almost hard to believe he’d be with Minnie Driver. He’s just too…classy. Her character needs to pull her shit together and start working it a little - if she’s “the queen”, it should be second nature to her.
I thought the story had some real depth (like the family’s reactions to the “buffers’” plight), but it was a bit all over the place. The woman who played the neighbor was great too, someone I’d be interested in knowing.

I’m looking forward to next week  .

PS: What’s a “spoiker”?

The music in the trailer should’ve tipped us off. Supertramp’s “Take the Long Way Home” is a happy tune but at heart a sad song:

When you look through the years
And see what you could have been
Oh, what might have been,
If you’d had more time.
So, when the day comes to settle down,
Who’s to blame if you’re not around?
You took the long way home.

I get the feeling that she married up. And she’s also got a prescription drug problem. I think she sees Dahlia as a younger version of her. Not a con artist, but definitely in uncharted territory.

Neither of them had the accent (not that I’m entirely sure what the accent should be…but I’m pretty sure it shouldn’t change every 5th word), but that was a minor problem. The kids were great.

Not what I expected. Interesting. Minnie Driver is great as always, and I’m seeing more to Eddie Izzard than I have before (though the accent might be giving him some trouble).

This is the first tv show I’ve seen about modern American Romani.
