The Riches 23 April '07 (spoilers)

Does anyone know if the how accurate the Traveller customs we’ve seen so far are?

Not even a clue, sorry. I’m up on some Irish folklore, but what I do know had little to do with everyday living, and besides, it’s stuff that originated centuries ago. I’d imagine that the Travellers evolved their own traditions here.

Tonight’s episode was good. Never in a million years would I have expected gallantry of Ken - you coulda knocked me over with a feather. It never occured to him that DiDi wouldn’t love him in return, but once he got that established, he proved himself quite worthy of her respect, if not her love. Him standing up to Ginny was perfect. I’m very worried though now about what’s going to happen next between him and Dale.

Previews for next week don’t hint at any family stuff, but looks like Wayne’s job is in jeopardy.

Yeah, Ken got alot more likable. Dale’s probally going to kill him soon. What’s up with Susan (that old woman) does she know Dale killed his father?

I can’t believe they haven’t found the buried money. They ought to rent a backhoe.
I wonder if the’ll ever unpack all of the boxes?

That bugs me. A LOT. You can’t dig a hole in grass and have it disappear within days. I really hate that bit, because yes, they can rent a backhoe for a couple hundred dollars tops, dig the cash out and put it in Hugh’s safe. All better. Which means that next week they wouldn’t have to pull a con to get the cash back. I don’t object to them pulling a con, mind, I just object to the why - that’s a simple problem to solve and it’s driving me nuts that they haven’t figured that out!

That’s a damn good question. I was curious enough to Google “Irish Travellers”, and there have been some serious studies of their culture. I sincerely hope the writers have studied some. I would hate to see a future thread pointing out the bogosity of it all.

I infer that Dahlia told her, but she refused to believe it.

Oh, and BTW, what is Dahlia’s connection to Earl and Susan?

I THINK niece, if she’s actually related at all. She’s mentioned that Dale is her cousin, but I think in a “settlement” like that , everyone there might be considered family even if there’s no blood relationship. I’m kind of curious about this myself, though, because there’s all that talk of Dahlia being “royalty”. Perhaps her father was Earl’s brother and his predecessor? If so, it would make sense for his brother to take his place if he died.

This is what I think, as well. Dahlia’s father was likely Earl’s older brother and the leader before Earl. Maybe he died without an heir (girls probably don’t count) and so it passed to Earl. In a community like that marrying cousins, even first cousins is probably fairly normal (guessing) so the fact that Dale has been in love with Dahlia all this time isn’t so strange. Is Dale married or still single?

Boy, that Ginny character is something else, isn’t she? I was cracking up when she was throwing the flower petals and cheering the (non)marriage. Ken, bless his simple heart, is a good person through and through. I think he truly believed Didi loved him and wanted to marry him. He clearly truly loves her to choose not to marry her or consumate even though he has a “right” to. I kinda hope we haven’t seen the last of him. He has potential. Of course if Dale kills him, then Ginny is likely to kill Dale.

Ooooh. Now there’s a thought. Ginny’s opportunistic, and though it is clear that Ken is a burden to her, it seems she is pretty loyal to him. Ken had no doubt that Ginny would abide by his instructions not to harm DiDi or her family (and the fact that she seemed to have taken his threat seriously instead of brushing it off reinforces that.) Dale seems to be getting increasingly unstable, and Ginny has never respected him or acknowledged his “right” to succession, so his attack on Ken may be enough to push her into action.

Speculating wildly now, and keeping in mind that Dale has threatened her pregnancy before, if she should go into labor - or lose the baby - because of any physical altercation with Dale, would the extended family rally around her?

I’m hoping Dale will be alligator food before the season’s over. He’s an interesting character, but he has to go.

Isn’t there a rule that if you have an alligator in the first act, you have to use it by the third?

Me too! I’m willing to go pretty far in my suspension of disbelief, but this one is about driving me bonkers. Sure, the writers get to create more troubles for them due to the money being lost, but for Pete’s sake, it was within a fairly small area, they really shouldn’t have that much trouble finding it. And I have a really hard time believing they’d just write off that much cash after digging a couple holes.

I’ve been thinking about the Ginny/Ken thing and why she is so protective of him, trying to make sure he gets what “he’s always dreamed of”, etc. As far as we can tell, their parents aren’t in the picture. I wonder if Ken is the last male in the family and there for the one to carry on the family line. If Ken dies, or leaves the clan, there will be no more Dannegan travelers in the family.

OTOH, an alliance between the Dannegans and the Malloys can be forged by a marriage, and then her family has a chance rising into promenance. We know Earl had chosen Wayne to succeed him before he ran off, so Ginny may be thinking Ken would have a chance to eventually become very high up in the Clan by marrying DiDi and being Waynes Son-in-law.

I thought the money wasn’t in their, errr the Rich family’s, yard, just a random bit of land in the neighborhood they parked the RV in. After it got towed, they weren’t even especially sure where it had been, due to the amazingly resiliant Eden Falls landscaping of course, so they’d have to go digging all obviously in what isn’t their land and they’d get caught.

Maybe?

Nope - the RV was parked next to the house originally, and in last night’s ep, Wayne was seen coming out of the house while Dahlia was digging.

In the argument Dahlia was having with the one-armed woman, OAW said that the RV was parked like a foot or something on someone elses property and then tried to tell her they couldn’t park their RV on their property at Eden Falls. That’s when Dahlia said something to the effect that if it was their property, they could park it anywhere they please.

Or something to that effect.

One Armed Lady said the RV was on her property, and she did have it towed, so it may have been close to the house, but wasn’t in their yard. Still, it looked like a kinda wooded area, not like a landscaped yard, and if there was enough cover to partly conceal an RV–remember it wasn’t towed right away, but after a day or two–there would be enough for them to go digging a bit, maybe not enough for a full-on backhoe exploration, but certainly more than they’ve done.

Perhaps someone else has already found it.

I’d think if that were the case they’d have shown them going back to get the money and finding an empty hole.
