I don’t have cable and never set an antenna up, so I won’t be watching it in the wee hours. (If I did, I would wear a hat.) I’m so embarrassed to admit it, but I love this shit. I want to see the dresses and the uniforms and the horses and everything. I want to see the Queen and her little pocketbook. Fortunately, one assumes there will be a picture or two that I can look at.
Just been watching a bit of the news. Prince William has been glad-handing people on The Mall, and people look happy. Good luck to them, hope it goes well. Heh, I think Britain is going to be a bit weird for the next 24 hours. Take a deep breath, both of you, it’s mental from here on…
Also William, son, you need to go for a number one cut.
Just to clarify - it is actually possible to be interested in this as an event, without being some sort of monarchy worhsipper.
I wouldn’t give two flips about anybody’s rank. I do really enjoy seeing people dressed to the nines in high fashion, beautiful artwork, and especially the kinds of functional art (the carriages, for intstance) that will be on public display for this event. These are things that we don’t see very often. Especially in the US, where most things are mass produced and very little is ever done by hand. Master bakers, chefs, dress designers etc will all do their very, very best for this event. That’s what I want to see.
I’m expecially looking forward to the T-Lo roundup afterwards [http://projectrungay.blogspot.com/] :: Rubs hands together ::
Okay, you kids get a good night’s sleep tonight! Big day tomorrow!
For the Brits, I can see it. I might understand the Canadian or Australian interest. But for Americans, it just doesn’t make sense. I mean, just what in the Wide Wide World of Sports does it have to do with us? Even if Prince Billy does become King in a few years, we still deal with the PM. And Katie has even less to do with it.
Seriously, it was more fun to watch Paula Abdul drool in front of millions on American Idol and I didn’t even bother with that.
I have no interest in the wedding and as I said above the hysteria here has reached upchuck point. However, suggesting it doesn’t make sense for *Americans *to be interested itself doesn’t make sense. Many people enjoy watching spectacle. Many people enjoy watching weddings. Heck, popular soap operas get high ratings for mocking up a wedding. People don’t have to have any interested at all from a political or historical standpoint to be interested.
It’s not for me though.
I might flip it on long enough to see what Kate’s dress looks like, and if the Queen might lend her one of her tiaras, and which one it is*, but that’s it. I like royal history, but I think this will be a yawn. Now, if this were a coronation, I’d probably watch, since that’s more historical.
*Yes, I’m pretty familiar with the royal jewels, so sue me, I like that kind of crap.
I’m at work, and oppisite me the two English girls (everyone else is Euro, and I’m a Kiwi) in the office are shouting the the beeb website for freezing up during the vows. One of them is even a bit teary (she’s as surprised as I am, as well). So I’m sort of watching-by-proxy, as I’m getting their commentary - ‘nice dress… oh, nice hat… arg, unfreeze!.. oh another hat’.
I work maybe fifteen minutes walk from the Abbey. There are flags everywere, from £5.99 nylon ones with the happty couple’s faces on it to the lovely ones lining Regent Street, which look ‘properly’ made (all the individual pieces were sewn together). Even the cafe I walk past has tiny Union Jacks stuck into each of the cake slices. It’s nice. Not something to do forever, but a week of flags and sunshine in an otherwise cynical city has been really nice.
I failed.
points and laughs
Good, isn’t it?
Grudgingly, yes, it’s extremely impressive. Mumble mumble.
Am embarrassed, I failed. I watched it and (blush) enjoyed it.
Kate’s sister is a babe!
ps in my defence I am in Tunisia at the moment and we couldn’t get into work because of demonstrators outside the plant so we were all confined to the camp and there is nothing else on TV
Yes and Yes. Live and live later with the girls. I admit I shed a tear, very moving. The calvary and carriages, yow!
Watched it live via BBC iPlayer. I went into the university canteen and they were also playing it live on the TVs there (in Italy). I heard from a Turkish co-worker that Turkey has also gone gaga over the wedding.
Also the music at the Abbey - heavy on the Welsh composers.
I voted no but had I a friend around for dinner. While I was cooking she was watching it and I ended up watching it too.
The Queen lent her the Cartier Halo Tiara. So I tend to awaken early & I turned on BBCamerica. (Hey, I like their news shows & love Doctor Who.)
Saw everybody arrive (in limos–the carriages were saved until the exit) & the couple get hitched. Then there was preaching & hymns & I left. (Just after they sang “Jerusalem.”) Will catch the rest on reruns.
Lots of hats! And David Beckham looks awfully good groomed & dressed so traditionally…
I thought the wedding would be a good opportunity to go to the supermarket and get some food, while it was quiet. Was a bit less busy than usual, but there were more people there and cars on the roads than I expected.
