Modnote: We also have a rule, don’t argue moderation in thread. I will say no more here accept the warning stands and take it to a PM or ATMB if you want.

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

I almost said that, but didn’t. Of course she can. I thought it might be fun to dye one of her braids blonde as a reference, but they could go all in. By the way, I’m not speculating on her look, the picture is posted that includes the actress.

Are those production stills, or just casting announcements? She could be made to look very different in the show, especially with braids.

And it’s not like Alexandra Daddario was blonde in the Lightning Thief movie, I don’t recall any complaints about that at the time.

Actually I did at the time. I had just read the series with my daughter. We thought it was bad casting as Blonde was an emphasized characteristic of the character. I hate the casting of Sif in Thor as the #1 feature of Sif is her literally Golden Hair. Sometimes it is important to the character. (Though I understand the Marvel Sif is not really the Sif of Norse legends and the Thor movies she was in were bad for other reasons then her hair.)

I don’t really care about the change this time in Percy Jackson, I just hope Disney gets the story right this time. The first attempts at bring those books to the screen were terrible.

I thought the Lightning Thief movie was OK popcorn fluff, but I haven’t read the books, so had no investment.

I’ve taught the book at school for many years. It’s probably the worst movie adaptation I’ve seen from a book. Nothing to do with hair color or race, though.

The script and the fact the actors are all WAY too old was insane.

I know that when people ask "what is the worst book → movie adaptation, my answer is always “The Lightning Thief”.

Ironically, the books were written in a way to make a movie/TV adaptation pretty easy. I mean these were actually published by a publisher owned by Disney.

It’s clearly the way to go. I hope they do 5 seasons, one per book. It could be really great. I read all 5 books and while they are not as good as Harry Potter, they are quite excellent. I don’t know that I found the ending as emotional as some other series, but it was a really fun ride.

It is 10 years later, so any emotional attachment to the books are far less, but it should be easy to make an entertaining series from them. This was one of the few series where we pre-ordered the books.

My advanced students and I read The Red Pyramid this year at school and really enjoyed it as well. Same author, same universe as Percy. It’s Egyptian gods instead, but they specifically mention Percy’s “greek” gods and acknowledge that they try not to interact with them.

@MrDibble, do you want us to take the Percy Jackson convo elsewhere or is it OK?

I don’t mind. It’s natural drift, and this isn’t GD

Rick Riordan writes very readable books. We went through the Percy Jackson Greek series, The Jason Roman Demi-God series and started the Kane Egyptian series but we left it there. He also had some connection to the 39 Clues series which my daughter also devoured, so I read them too.

Is this based on America’s song The Sandman? It’s an awesome and mysterious song.

Ain’t it foggy outside
All the planes have been grounded
Ain’t the fire inside?
Let’s all go stand around it

Funny I’ve been there
And you’ve been here

We ain’t had no time to drink that beer

'Cause I understand
You’ve been running from the man
That goes by the name of the Sandman

The source material explicitly shows and states that the Endless take form at will, and/or appear in familiar ways to those who observe them as a part of their very nature.

Dream and Death and the rest mostly are drawn as white people because that’s who the writer/illustrators pictured as the audience (or perhaps because that’s the familiar way the Endless appeared to the minds of their creators).

It’s wholly appropriate and in-universe-consistent to shift the appearance of any of the Endless.

No. It’s based on much earlier comic characters (the first predates the band America, but it’s more the 1974 one that was rebooted by Gaiman, although the pulp one also has an influence, like in the mask) as well as myth and fairy tale. That song just springs from the same folklore character

In the Marvel comics, Sif was always portrayed with dark hair. The comics later reconciled this with the golden-haired Sif of myth with a story in which Loki cut off her natural hair and replaced it with hair made by dwarves.

Other than her original hair still being blonde not dark, that story is straight out of the Eddas.

At the risk of thread drift… I’m looking for new stuff to read, and it sounds like the books this is based on, as well as related books, might fit the bill. Can i ask about them?

Sandman, or Percy Jackson? I mean, I don’t mind either way, but I’ve only read the former.
