The Sandman trailer - upd, now on Netflix

Ah, I see the difference. Thank you for setting me straight.

Either. I’m looking for some easy-to-read fantasy/sci fi, something that’s not so fluffy it will give me an upset stomach, but is fun to consume.

I should probably start a new thread.

Most of the Sandman titles were Graphic Novels weren’t they? I think there is only 1 book.

As to Rick Riordan his titles are really YA, and are light, somewhat fluffy and quick reads. There are the 5 Percy Jackson books (Greek Demi-Gods in NY camp/school) and I would start with them.
Rest of his books:

Sandman is comics, not novels (there are some short stories as well), but I would highly recommend them to anyone. They are not necessarily always easy-to-read, though, sometimes they go to dark places. But that’s balanced out by a lot of humour and worldbuilding.

More wisdom from Neil, Himself:

I’m a great fan of YA novels. In fact, maybe I should just go browse recent Newbery Award winners to find something to borrow from the library.

Thanks that sounds good.

Right, but using it to explain the difference in hair color was Marvel’s invention.

What you want are The Sandman issues no. 1–75 by Neil Gaiman. That sounds crazy, but if you go to the library you will find them collected as either 10 separate volumes or a 2-volume omnibus edition.

I can accept a non-white Death. Just as long as we avoid the “Black Death” puns which are too obvious to be at all funny.

But a female John Constantine? No, that I can’t accept.

Johanna was an ancestor of John’s, straight out of the Sandman comics. However, in the comics, she lived in the late 18th - early 19th centuries and not the current day, and I don’t think she had a supernaturally prolonged life.

I wish they had used Ambrose Bierce instead.

“You learn the basics, have a hideous experience in a graveyard, they give you a trenchcoat and steal your razor. Like an assembly line, really.”

For those not familiar with the character, he’s a carbon-copy of John Constantine created when the author couldn’t get the rights. Apparently there’s a whole union of disreputable urban magicians.

As is Willoughby Kipling from Doom Patrol. Another Constantine ripoff/fill created when Grant Morrison couldn’t get the editor’s permission to use him.

I’m super-excited for the series, and I find the bitching about casting is fucking ridiculous considering 1) Nobody’s seen them actually act, and 2) Gaiman OKs it, and 3) it’s part of the canon that the Endless appearance is based on the perceiver.

The Sandman comics are of such high quality, they exist in that space where you wish you could erase your brain and experience them fresh for the first time.

For those who have read them, the first two volumes of a full-cast audio production are on Audible and they’re truly excellent. About as close as you can get to seeing it with fresh eyes.

Yes, they are excellent.

And I’m astonished that Gaiman is astonished that people want their live-action versions of comic book characters to look like the comic book characters. Would he be suprised that people prefer Patrick Stewart for Professor X over Louie Anderson? That they prefer Halle Berry for Storm over Rebel Wilson? That they prefer Christian Bale for Batman over DJ Qualls? That they prefer Tom Holland for Spider-Man over Warwick Davis?

Annotated Sandman Vol 1 & 2. They are huge fat books, and run about $35-$90 each. But at nearly six pounds, you get your money’s worth.

Also try the Rivers of London Series By Ben Aaronovitch , but get the books, not the graphic novels to start.

The Hounds of the Morrigan. The Dark is Rising series.

The Annotated volumes are better, imho.

Can we not turn this into yet another debate about race, or just split that off?

It sounds like they need to start putting trigger warnings on these things.

“Warning: viewer may see main character with races, genders, and sexual orientations of humans they don’t like.”

If you want the Sandmanverse, you are facing an intimidating number of titles:

Including a current ongoing one.

I read the free sample from the Kindle app of my phone, and have the first book on hold from my library. Sadly, they won’t be good on my actual Kindle, which is black and white, but they look pretty good on my phone.
