Lucien (Morpheus’ head librarian) got gender/racebent in the Netflix series. You’d think that if being accurate to the comics is sole reason for the complaints surrounding Kirby Howell-Baptiste’s casting as Death, people would complain about that too.
Sorry, no. That’s not how racism works.
You’d think if there were other reasons, people would state them. “She’s wrong because she doesn’t have white skin” is by far the loudest complaint.
This almost got me interested in whatever the hell this thread is about but turns out it wasn’t.
This is a very weird thread. There should be a badge for that.
I understand both sides of this is it OR isn’t it ‘‘right ‘’ for the characters 2b different in this film version than their original representations in Gaiman’s graphic novel version. I’m going to hold off until I actually SEE the film series 2b making my judgements; as someone a bit wiser than me once wrote, “It is the tale, not he [or she] who tells it.” And again, Neil had full creative control on this production & over the years he’s proved repeatedly that he know what he’s doing. I’m another who’s been waiting YEARS to have a film version of "The Sandman’’ become a reality & these trailers seem 2have the right tone, the appropriate atmosphere for this to work. Let’s wait & see!
For me, she is wrong because she does not have literally white skin. I don’t mean pinkish Caucasian, I mean all her exposed skin should be powder white, in a way that no human can without makeup. She should look like this:
(This cosplayer might have got the look with lighting instead of body makeup, though.)
I haven’t read these in quite a while and I realized while watching the trailer.
I don’t remember a plot. A tone. And some visuals. And some characters. And some scenes. And maybe a few things that string together to something that could be a termed a short story. But not an actual plot.
I think they got the look right - but…I’m wary about whatever they put on film - because I’m not sure what it should be.
I HAVE in my head. But I know GD better then to bring it here!
Lucien is supposed to TOWER over Morpheus who is a little tall himself!!
And i’ll just spill it all out in this one post. I love Jenna Coleman. But no blonde??? GTFO.
And finally…no black blobs for eyes for Morpheus? Ugh…
There very much was an actual plot.
Moderating:
This is thread shitting. If you aren’t interested in the thread, don’t post in it.
Not a formal warning.
The series tended to go in arcs, with the occasional one-off. However, it was all tied together at the end.

And finally…no black blobs for eyes for Morpheus? Ugh…
That was in a recent interview w/ Gaiman; it basically boiled down to being a Special Effects Failure that proved to be distracting (when they tried it during a screen test).
You know, one of the really neat things about the Sandman comics were how different arcs had different artists with often wildly different art styles. I always took this as a kind of meta-commentary on the broad themes about perception and mutability of the Endless. They look like what we think they should look like, and they look like what the various artists think they should look like.
None of them were wrong and none of them were right, because the Endless and their domains and their stories look like everything and nothing.
Which is to say that complaining over new interpretations of this series is even sillier than the perennial complaints that always pop up when adaptations don’t look precisely as we think they should.
Yeah??? Is Jenna Coleman gonna use a Scouse accent? Cuz Im tired of my Constantine’s having no Liverpool accent!!
Apologies @MrDibble, my post was not well thought out.
Not quite sure what a Scouse Accent is but she was born and raised in Blackpool which is fairly close to Liverpool, so she can probably do an acceptable Liverpool accent.
FTR, Jenna is playing Johanna Constantine, the great-great-great-grandmother of John Constantine.
Im way ahead of you!!
I actually did a little research before posting. Looked up distance and everything and whether Blackpool or Lancashire is scouse (Apparently it isn’t)
Yeah, I can’t discern from the tidbits of Jenna’s Constantine we have what she’s doing accent-wise. I CAN tell Mad Hettie is doing your traditional crazy-bird-lady cockney.
FWIW, if you do a Google Image search for “Death Sandman Comics,” it’s clear that different artists drew her differently. Some drew her as chalk-white, but others drew her as racially White, with tan and peach and pink tones to her skin. (example, example, example).
Inhuman skin tone is absolutely not a necessary part of her character.
Your second example is her as literally a human…BUT…when she was a Chinese human, she was alabaster. So…my point is moot.
As for the third, any appearances of her outside Gaiman books never happened in my head canon. Except Lucifer comics which I will allow.

I’m curious if anyone has their books handy and can flip through them. I don’t own the books, so I’m having to rely on Internet searches, which makes it trickier.
Would a Death appearance outside of a Gaiman book, but inside a Gaiman show, count?
“Judges?..sure.”
