Hey dopers anyone in the SCA? I live in the phoenix area and haven’t been involved in a while… anyone going to the Estrella War? If so what Kingdom are you with? (Local phx baronies, pls e-mail me if you feel like it) How do you like the land-grab system? Tell me stuff you love about the SCA because I am soooo coming back (probably after the war, but mebbe I will visit Estrella, as it is easy driving distance!)

I’m in the Proto-Incipient Kingdom of the Northshield, mka Twin Cities, MN. No Estrella for me, but I am going to Gulf Wars & Pennsic this year. I’m on watch for membership in the Bloodguard, a fighting household based in the East Kingdom.
I’ll be with the Bloodguard, which will either be in the East Kingdom royal cabin (His Abdicated Majesty is the head of the household) or out camping somewhere. In case we meet on the field, my helmet looks like this.
I’m not active at the moment, but I do fence in the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands, Aethelmearc, less than 100 miles from Pennsic. Once I get my employment straightened out, I may reactivate. I’ve no idea whether I’ll make Pennsic or not this year, but when we get closer to it, if anyone else is coming out, let me know and I can at least arrange to meet you off-site.
As for me, I love the pageantry, but hate the politics!

Here Here! (or should I say HUZZAH!) That is why I stopped going too. The Kingdoms here started using a ‘land grab’ system where only official groups could reserve space at the war, essentially forcing out those of us who like to slip between the established entities. Even though we are paid members. I also don’t fight, (motorcycle accident injuries prevent) and haven’t taken up any other specific craft/art (lack of money and/or motivation prevent that).
I am soon going to go after some niche or another in the society, though, and try to once again fight off the politics and join. Maybe I will become a merchant. That always looked like just the thing…
Of course I am not a heavy fighter I prefer the swish and poke.
Not going to gulf wars just not into crowds. I would love to go to estrela wars to talk with James the Just about a custom sword he is going to be working on for me.
Tuchux wench here, Tarn Clan, from Maryland. I’m too far for Estrella, but have made nine Pennsics. I missed last year, unfortunately, but hopefully will be back among the Tribe this year. I know we’re not officially SCAdians, but we so love annoying you all…!

Tristan ap Llewellyn, West Kingdom, Principality of Cynagua. I haven’t been fighting now for over 2 years, dang it. I miss it dreadfully. I do support for the one fighter in our group.
Ethilrist- Can I ask what the meaning of “His Abdicated Majesty” may be? Sounds like a good story there…
I tried to get involved a few years back but did not know anyone involved and it seemed to be very cliquish. I would like to get involved but am not sure about the best way to go about it.
Likewise on finding it cliquish Zap. I can soooo relate to that. That is why I am thinking maybe I will be a merchant. At least that is a clique that mingles with everyone… plus mebbe make some bank!
Zap- I found the same thing when I first got in. The answer, IMHO, is to get a group of folks together to get in. Aleviate that clique problem by bringing one of your own with you!
That is exactly what I (we) did the first time Tristan Had a bunch of people, threw together a household… the chaff kinda fell away from the wheat though, you know? They all dropped out. I will have to get a couple more to add to my family and try again…
Kingdom of Caid, Barony of Calafia (formerly of the East, Barony of Bhakail). I don’t play much out here, but this year will be my 14th Pennsic War in Aethelmarc, running the Clan Blue Feather encampment & Ball.
Esprix, even if I don’t make it to Pennsic and assuming I don’t get a wonderful job offer that entails moving, you are still one of the Dopers I would like to meet most. Would you (and anyone else) be up for an unofficial off-site Dopefest?
I’d offer to host an on-site one, but I’ve also made noises about hosting a Hell’s M’s party at Pennsic, if the concept of combination of Hell’s Mensans and SCAdians doesn’t give me too many nightmares.
