I found it quite entertaining, but the pathetic male leage just kept pissing me off which diminished my enjoyment immensely. It was still a lot of fun to look at though.
I see lots of movies with subtitles, but it’s hard to get used to dialog that’s half-English, half-French and half-Spanish.
It reminded me of another, far more depressing movie, Soloman and Gaynor, which is in half-Enligh, half-Yiddish and half-Welsh. Go ahead and figure that out.
LOVED IT! Loved loved loved loved loved. Not quite Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind love, but still, much love. My husband felt the same way, and we can’t wait to see it again. We need to anyway because first, there are lines we missed because we were laughing so hard and also, we came in during the last preview and by then the theater was packed, and the only place to sit was the very front row. We love being close, but generally 3rd-5th row back, depending on how close the screen is. We weren’t bothered by it, but there’s so much to see in the film and our eyes were darting all over the place.
I loved everything about it…the look of it, the acting, Gael (swoon), the music, the story, the sets, the supporting cast, the multiple languages, and the creativity of it all. It’s goofy, silly, surreal and bizarre. I think it’s a wonderfully delightful film. It’s not for everybody, but it was for me, and one of the main reasons I love my husband is that it was for him too. It fits our sensibilities. A lot of people will probably leave the theater scratching their heads or even be angry at the waste of their time. Anyone who thinks they might not like it should probably listen to their instincts and stay far far away. Miles away.
Disclaimer: I love fantasy for grownups, which is probably a big plus for enjoying the film. Movies like Brazil, Eternal Sunshine, Babe: Pig In The City (yes it is, really), Idlewild, Moulin Rouge, Big Fish, and others I can’t think of because I’m too tired, are right up my alley. Until now, my favorite movie of the year so far has been Idlewild. TSOS knocks it out of 1st but just barely. I have to see both movies again. Many many times.
I get to see it tomorrow (before anyone else in my town does 8)). I’m going to have to see it several times over the next two weeks. This semester I’m doing a thesis on the North American Francophone Neo-Surrealism, and Michel Gondry is my primary focus. I can’t wait to see it!
This is what my professor said. Actually, she said, “He’s way too hot to be that petulent.” Hee. I actually really sympathized with him. He’s probably the one character that’s the most like me out of all the films I’ve seen. I don’t want to get too much into it, but everything was exactly how I feel.
Yeah, but half of the ones I’m looking at are by Jeunet, whom I dislike, so they’re already ruined anyway.
Actually, I think Gael Garcia Bernal nailed the character of Stephane–I think he’s supposed to be very childish, and anybody who has (or has taken care of) a child knows that that can mean adorable winsomeness at times and petulant hissyfits at others. I don’t think you’re supposed to be completely sympathetic to him at all times, but in the end he’s very charming, and Stephanie helps him mature somewhat.
Another completely shallow note: what is it about Charlotte Gainsbourg? She’s not that conventionally good-looking, or even striking, but there’s something so… so about her that you can’t help but think her pretty.
