Lynn, hope you’re feeling better, but I would hope you would smack down anyone offering excuses for any mistakes you made. I’ve had Wisom teeth removed, tumors taken out, multiple broken bones, etc. Trust me, I’ve had some of the best drugs in the world.

Why would you want to? Can’t you see that by creating a double standard you’re actually contributing significantly to the confusion and the animosity?
It’s a way of reclaiming the word, and lessening its impact on the subculture. When Savage Love started all the letters were addressed “Hey Faggot.” The repetition of the word in that context removed its power to shock and harm. (See also the use of ‘nigger’ in rap music.) Ultimately, its a way to say: you identify us as a dyke or queer, and you think that’s bad. We’ll accept that you use this word, but we’re going to make the word mean something different from what you intend.
Nigger the pejoritive becomes nigger the greeting in Pulp Fiction.
Queer the pejoritive becomes “Queer eye for the straight guy”
etc, etc.
I think that the confusion that this creates (when is queer a bad word, and when is it not?) can be easily summed up: if you wouldn’t use the word to describe yourself, your better off saying something else. And that’s worth lessening the verbal punch that the word creates. When a word is only hate speach coming from a bigot, then you can focus on the bigot, not the word.

I’m glad now I didn’t post in that thread (I nearly did), as I’d be on the receiving end of this crap too. It doesn’t pay to support Israel on these boards. Last time I backed up a guy who queried Iran’s rejection of emergency Israeli assistance to its earthquake victims, I was accused (through LiveJournal) of “posting whilst drunk”. It speaks volumes about the debating capabilities of the people I’m arguing with here. Well people, I had a glass of chablis with my dinner three hours ago, and I think this stinks. Apologies for not taking the latest fashionable viewpoint.

Airman has my support, too. He might have Lynn’s support as well. This isn’t about support. It’s not a football game with Lynn cheering for one of the teams. He just got a warning. I’ve had warnings. Haven’t you every had a warning?
I was actually thinking of asking this same question, but absurdly I couldn’t think of a way of asking it without risking having some recently-awakened-to-hypersensitivity schmoe come along and accuse me of homophobia for asking the question.
As I said, it’s a pretty established tradition amongst anti-racists and anti-homophobes to turn hate speech on its ear in one form or another as a tool for fighting prejudice. It may be that this board wants to restrict that tactic, and that’s fine, but I hardly think it’s implied under “don’t be a jerk.”

You’ve obviously never had one. Your whole head throbs. No pain killer can help you. It is persistent, and you lose sleep, can’t eat, and risk an infection traveling to your heart valve. It is extremely serious and debilitating. It is remarkable that she could even do her tasks, so all I said was cut her some slack. And everybody acts like, well fuck her pain and hardship, I want my damn answer.
