I respectfully disagree. I think there’s rarely a need for moderator attitude. Even less so when it’s being presented as a “favor.”
For the record, I agree with you. Mods (and admins) are not infallable, themselves.
My impression (based on nothing much) is that the “no joke threads in the Pit” is sort of a new rule. Or at least a new interpretation of the Prime Directive, which came as a surprise to some long-time members.
I got warned for starting a semi-joke thread (no, I won’t link to it), although not in such a way to suggest they were doing me a favor by not suspending me.
I interpreted it as saying that MPSIMS is the place for fake Pittings when you don’t really mean it, but I have never tested the theory. Maybe fake Pittings are altogether verboten, which seems a pity.
I think the whole notion of outlawing fake Pittings is a bad one. Pitting is only really amusing if it is done in a semi-lighthearted way. If I really thought that people were wishing horrifying forms of sexual deformity on each other, it would cease to be fun, even a little. It has to have humorous exaggeration in it, or it is offensive. Allowing fake Pittings would preserve the notion that the kind of over-the-top abuse common in the Pit is not always seriously meant. More like “ranking”, or “playing the dozens” than genuinely accusing someone of performing fellatio on sheep.
And what sense does it make to say, “It’s OK to Pit your large intestine when you are constipated, but not a fellow Doper unless you genuinely hate and despise him/her/it/them”? Do you have to genuinely hate your large intestine, or get suspended?
My $4.95 worth.
