The SDMB & a zero tolerance policy (or: Lynn? A word, please?)

I’d say she agrees with me. Wouldn’t you?

BTW: good for Lynn for recognizing that her decision making regarding the SDMB may be impaired lately.

That’s the one where he asked me if I was off my meds. And in fact, I was being weaned from my Prednisone.

Are you still being weaned? Because I just looked up a bit about prednisone and see that “intense mood swings” are one of the potential side effects of the drug. I’ve been both baffled and extremely annoyed by what I’ve seen as irrational, vicious, cruel, unprovoked attacks by you on people over the last week. Do you think that this weaning could be at least in part behind your behavior?

Daniel

Yes, it could. My weaning from Prednisone is complete, but I’m still on the Percocets. I can’t really blame the drugs or the pain, even though the steroids made me rather aggressive/assertive. Sometimes, I just forget that their are people behind the words here. When I remember, it makes a difference.

That definitely does help to know – I wasn’t sure whether you’d just turned mean or what.

How would you recommend we respond to you when we perceive you attacking someone like that? My impulse is to attack right back, but that doesn’t seem helpful (or fair, given that I’m not on drugs with side-effects). At the same time, while I now understand it, other folks who didn’t read that won’t understand why they’re being attacked like that. What would you recommend? Is there some way we can respectfully remind you that there are people behind the words, a way that will probably be effective?

Thank you for the explanation, in any case.
Daniel

Daniel

Different people react different ways to different things, of course, but I am most moved by reasonable argument. Therefore, I would most appreciate exactly what you just said. “Lib, I respectfully remind you that it is your Lord whom you are addressing.”

Okay, that’ll work. I feel a little weird about using those words, being an atheist and all–but if you’ll take it in the spirit I mean it in, that sounds good.

Thanks!
Daniel

Yeah, I saw that. As far as I can tell, it’s also the thread where he first called you “Lib”, only after This Year’s Model had done the same. But that’s not what I was asking about.

Is it your contention that his very first post to you is in that thread?

Actually, my contention at this point is that I shouldn’t have given him such a hard time. I regret that I did and wish that I hadn’t.

In that case, I’ll drop the subject.

(Bolding mine)
Just thought this was interesting from the thread Jeff Olsen linked to.

I know Coldfire is from Amsterdam others may not, the question though is about hate speach. I’m not making any claims against Coldfire but where do we start if the aim is to eliminate all hate speach? I could use location specific slurs about some people and make them think I was paying them a compliment whilst others who may happen to live near where I do may understand it was meant as an insult as intended and the insultee would be none the wiser.

Censorship has its flaws also.

Y’know, honestly, Lynn just gave me a warning for starting a Pit thread requesting a pitting, and all in all, I’m not 100% sure if it was a joke or not. My first reaction was to laugh it off, but it seemed especially spiteful. Things like, “I would have banned you, but I’m bending over backwards being nice” and la la la la la.

I’m sorry, Lynn, but if that wasn’t a joke, that’s a pretty shitty way of approaching a longtime member who has never committed Sin #1 here on the SDMB. I understand from some of the posts here in this thread that you’ve had some medical problems of late, but what ever happened to tact, for Chrissakes? You’re a moderator. You’re supposed to set the example of proper behavior around here.

Besides, I just had all four of my wisdom teeth removed on Tuesday, so if you want to be nice, we can swap war stories. But your comments about “bending over backwards?” Weak.

That was a bit strong. The established penalty for starting a joke thread in the pit has been a week suspension and loss of a first-round draft pick.

She said “suspend” not “ban”. Bit of a difference, there.

Sorry, I mistyped. That said, it was more the tone than the punishment. The whole “I have magnanimously decreed that you are spared, little man” tone.

Absolutely, the mods need to maintain some semblance of order here, but I think we could all do without the holier-than-thou 'tude.

No, we couldn’t, believe me. Keep in mind that many of the members here are still in college or less.

And your point is what, again?

That those of us in college should bow down and kiss the feet of those like you, and appreciate the fact that we are worthy of you?

No. I just mean exactly what you demonstrated.

Jesus Christ, I should’ve known better than to chance argue with someone who is the epitome of what Chastain86 asked about the necessity of.

Lib? You going strange on us again?
