The SDMB doesn't work for me - Virus?

On my home computer, when I open Chrome or IE and type the address of SDMB (boards.straightdope.com) it loads the favicon, but the page loads blank. The main site same thing. I can access the site from my Chrome browser on a laptop using the same router.

I think I may have gotten hit with some malware but I can’t tell. I removed and reinstalled Chrome, removed firefox, no luck. I tried to access the board directly through the IP address 209.104.5.198 but I only return the result “It works”.

Any clue what to look for? When I boot up in safe mode - with networking ,the site works. There’s gotta be something blocking it?

Do you have a firewall turned on? Maybe the 'Dope ended up on a blocked list there.

download and run TFC by oldtimer

download and run ADWCleaner

see if site loads

if not download and install malwarebytes and run a full scan

remove everything detected

report back

I appreciate the forum move but I think I actually downloaded something bad. I tried to install a codec and then this happened.

n/m, still doesn’t work. Will try the last app.

Malaware appears to have removed about 100 things - mostly PUP type and some other crap in the registry. Good news is that the site now works on the desktop.

Thanks! I was not above just buying a new computer. It’s a good an excuse as any.
