Yup, it’ll be mandatory to keep three. Otherwise you’ll cheat around the draft order.

Worst to first draft order, but keep the serpentine draft? If the draft is anything but random it might make more sense to go back to a straight draft instead.
Can’t choose draft types on Yahoo.
I’m curious why you think a straight draft would be better than serpentine for a worst to first draft. Gives the worst player his 3 keepers and the pick of the litter, as well as a strong 2-3 pick.
I’ve seen leagues that go draft order worst-to first, and the first three rounds of the draft are straight but then go to serpentine. Just to give a small advantage to the sucky teams to try for some parity.
i dont like the your keepers are next years top 3 picks. i think you pick someone like mcgahee in the 11th, and you keep him, he’s your 11th round pick for next year. i think that is how most keeper leagues do it.
end of year keepers and worst to first serpentine is fine with me
That is how most are done. But most keeper leagues aren’t done exclusively over the internet. Trying to coordinate 14 complete strangers to remember three picks throughout their own draft, as well as 39 other players they can’t pick up could be one large clusterfuck, with enormous potential for disaster. I can just see the following:
“It’s the 8th round and no one has picked McGahee?!? He’s mine.”
<click>
All: “Asshole!”
If we’re making the first three rounds the keepers, we would want to make the draft order first-to-worst, not worst-to-first.
I’m pretty sure Yahoo drafts must be serpentine, and round 4 would be our “first” round. Since the even rounds are reverse order, you’d have to put me first in the draft order since I’ll win the league, then I’d be last in round 4 (our first free round). Hamlet will then be last in the draft order but have the first free pick in round 4.
Thinking way far ahead, don’t most keeper leagues have a cap on how many years in a row you can keep a player (usually three)? Anyone have any thoughts on that?
I’m OK with end of year keepers. After the Super Bowl, maybe?
Well the only way to avoid somebody being called an Asshole at the draft was if we kicked Munch out.

why can’t we just keep a posting of Do Not Draft players and mark who should get them and in what round?
its not any harder to follow then not drafting those players in the first 3 rounds.
Wilson, good call. That is of course what everyone meant, it’s just that you’re the only one smart enough to communicate it.
mrchan, I agree. And it would be pretty easy, except for one thing - pre-drafting. If someone can’t make the draft, the computer picks. Sure, you could predraft your keepers at the top to make sure, but that hoses them out of the league forever (Toefeld in the 17th this year, 1st next year and every year afterwards - completely unbalances the league.)
Plus, most leagues do it where if you pick a keeper from the 17th round (Toefeld), next year you forfeit Round 14 (each pick goes up 3 rounds in value each year). Even more confusion for people not in the same room. To paraphrase Gandalf the Grey:
Keep it simple. Keep it safe.
alright, i’m fine on the keeper league thing then.
what about playoff weeks? i think weeks 14-15 are better for playoffs than 16-17. by 17 all the studs will be sitting out.
Because the serpentine draft is designed to make every draft position equal. If we intend to use draft order to equalize teams it would make more sense to use a draft style that supports that goal rather than counteracts it… know what I mean?
Playoff Weeks
Weeks 14-15 sound good. Fantasy studs won’t sit out, plus, with 14 teams in the league, we will play each other exactly once. Weeks 15-16 would be ok too though.
Keeper selection time
If we do end of year keepers, I strongly feel we should get a “reserve” keeper. E.g., pick 4 keepers at end of season, and 1-3 weeks (or whatever) before draft day, submit 3 of those 4 as your selections. This greatly reduces the chances of getting totally shafted by offseason events beyond your control.
However we do keepers, someone(s) will have to keep copies of the end of season rosters for the league so that things don’t get FUBAR.
neuroman, I think the keeper idea is excellent. And as someone who got burned by Terrell Owen’s lackluster bench riding in Weeks 16 and 17 last year, I’m in favor of the 15-16 playoff period. We should come up with something for Week 17, just for fun.
just b/c it is intended to be that way, doesn’t mean it is.
mrchan I don’t have any idea what you’re trying to say. But I have no doubt that it’s an excellent point.
neuroman, I don’t get it, do we make extra rules during the season to prevent people getting totally shafted by events beyond your control? No, if somebody gets injured you replace him and do the best you can. Why do it for offseason decisionmaking? In my opinion injuries and similar events are a part of fantasy football and we shouldn’t make extra rules as ways to get around them.
i probably should have said designed instead of intended. all i’m saying is year 2, we should keep with the serpentine draft. everyone only keeps 3 players, and likely everyone will ahve 3 “studs” that arent too much better/worse than everyone else’s. so giving someone the first pick in each round, gives them a HUGE advantage.
Okay, regarding next year’s draft order. Seems there is some benefits to a straight draft and to a serpentine draft. Serpentine is a bit more even, and its fairness varies really depending on the draft pool, etc. (i.e. sometimes it’s beneficial to draft at the front, sometimes at the end, sometimes in the middle, blah, blah, blah).
So here’s what I suggest. Since we ultimately want parity, and I have to have some challenge in crushing each and every one of you year after year, the worst teams need a little boost - and that’s intended to be accomplished through the next draft.
So how’s about we have people pick their own drafting slot, worst picks first?
Once Weirddave completely gets obliterated after drafting the Ravens’ defense in the third round, he’ll get to pick at the beginning of next year where he wants to draft, 1-14 (serpentine). Then Shibb (having picked up Emmitt Smith in Rd. 2 and watch him break both legs in Week 3) chooses where in 1-14 he wants (save for Dave’s spot), etc. Lastly, I’ll choose where to begin selecting my repeat championship team, having won the title on the backs of Rodney Peete and Peter Warrick.
Nice.
