The SDMB Salad Bar-what's in your's?

Fresh greens, preferrably spinach or “wild” greens. Iceberg if no other option.
Peas
Sweet onions
Sunflower seeds
Feta or parmesean cheese
Little bit of vinagrette or sweet onion/poppyseed dressing.

Pretty plain, I know. I do get into moods where I toss on the hard boiled eggs, cheddar cheese, bacos- if doing that I have to have Western dressing. I used to like it with ranch dressing, but ranch dressing on salads brings back horrid morning sickness memories. shudder

And taco salads. LURVE me some taco salad. Especially if they have black bean salsa.

Hmm, I am a freak. I put tuna in my salad.

Lettuce, tomato, cheese, black olives, green olives, mushrooms, carrots, ham, bacon bits, cucumbers, pepperoncini if I have some, broccoli, cauliflower, and a can of tuna.

Hubby’s been making these killer salads lately; I’ll try to recall what he did in the last:

Spinach
Onions - scallions, purple, white (and/or)
Corn (or lima beans)
Broccoli
Yellow tomatoes (better texture than red)
Carrots
Mushrooms
Cucumbers
Orange - very small slices, with the rind included
Hard-boiled egg
Cheese

He’ll also put fresh cilantro in salads sometimes.

Rats, I forgot the peppers. Red and green bell peppers, also very good.

If I’m at the Souper Salad in by the office:

romaine lettuce
spinach
celery
cucumbers
bell pepper (red, yellow, & green)
A little broccoli
black olives
garbanzo beans
kidney beans
pickled beets
purple onions
bits of boiled egg
green peas
jicama if they have it that day
crumbled feta or crumbled bleu cheese
fat-free cranberry vinaigrette dressing

If I’m at the salad bar at Steak & Ale,

romaine lettuce
cucumbers
bell pepper
black olives
beans if they have it
and the most yummy luscious bleu cheese salad dressing ever!!!

baby spinach
1 chopped up tomato
sliced mushrooms
(sometimes) artichoke hearts
balsamic vinegar

I’ve recently taken to making at least one meal a day of just salad; usually the foundations listed below, two or three optional veggies and one or two protein or carb items. I try to keep it to five or six ingredients total.

Foundation

Lettuce, Iceberg or leaf (what’s up w/all the iceberg bashing, I happen to like it)
Tomato (grape or plum, round only when in season)

Optional veg.

Broccoli
Cucumber
Celery
Carrots, sliced or grated
Beets
Red onion
Spring onion
Red bell pepper
Red cabbage
Radish
Black olives

Carbs/protein

Hard-boiled egg
Cotto salami
Ham
Turkey
Tuna
Cheese (cheddar, jack or feta)
Chick peas
Red beans
Black-eyed peas

Dressing of choice; my current favoritees are HEB Maple Dijon and Spicy Italian.

Haven’t gotten bored yet.

This seems a completely pointless thread, unless someone is looking for salad recipes.

Anyway. I’m very picky about salad. I’m a vegetarian (fish-e-tarian, actually), but I’m not a big fan of salad. To all you carnivores who would like to make sure you have something for the vegetarians you’ve invited: salad is not an entree. Putting pasta in a salad does not magically turn it into an entree. It’s still just a salad. Thank you.

Spinach, Romaine or Green Leaf Lettuce. Never iceberg
Sprouts: broccoli, radish, alfalfa, whatever strikes my fancy.
Shredded carrots
cilantro, lots
celery sometimes
green onions sometimes
asiago or cheddar cheese
gorgonzola or feta
some nut or seed: pumpkin, sunflower, almond, toasted pecans, walnuts

Either Annie’s organic dressing, the low fat Gingerly Dressing, or something I made from the herbs in the yard and olive oyl and vinegar. (Typo intended)

I can’t stand raw green pepper, raw onions and raw tomatoes.

What a grump. I wouldn’t invite you over to eat no steeenkin’ salad anyway.

Speak for yourself! THIS omnivore adores rabbit food and has been known to eat herself a big ol’ salad for dinner! :stuck_out_tongue:

BTW, I’ve had this before at a friend’s house, but I haven’t made it myself: fried ramen noodles. Crumble them up, and fry them for a few seconds in oil (watch, they burn quickly), and then top them on a salad for a high calorie treat!

Lately I’ve been making a lot of salads consisting of baby spinach, grilled chicken, feta cheese, imitation bacon bits, fat-free seasoned croutons, and Kraft Free Catalina or Italian dressing. It’s yummy and it’s a big part of the reason I’ve recently dropped over 35 pounds.

I love cobb salad, but almost everything in it is fattening, so I’ve given it up for now.

Given my choice of anything on a salad bar, I’d go for:

iceberg or romaine, but not the bitter white bits. Yuck. Just the green stuff.
baby spinach
shredded carrots
sliced cucumber
almost any cheese (no Swiss!)
baby corn
red bell pepper
sesame seeds (or other tasty seeds)
almonds/cashews
hard-boiled eggs
turkey
ham
tuna
real bacon, crumbled
croutons, soft enough to easily poke with a fork
olives
tofu
grilled chicken
marinated mushrooms
chow mein noodles
dressing, either French, Catalina, bleu cheese, or Italian

Taco salad is also delicious.
