The SDMB Weight Loss Club - Part Deux

Speaking of “bring me real food,” does anybody have recommendations for when I get my wisdom teeth out? From the anecdotes of others, I expect I won’t be wanting much other than milkshakes, but that seems like a recipe for disaster. Should I ignore the plan and pamper my drug-addled self for a few days, or is there some healthy alternative that I can stock up on/make lots of before I go in?

Cadbury Angel, I notice you’re on the WW program. This gives you a few options. You certainly can make lower points shakes and smoothies with skim milk, ice, Splenda, and whatever flavorings you prefer. You would probably also tolerate sugar free jello and pudding well, as well as no-sugar-added, fat-free ice cream.

Or, you can bank some points ahead of time so you can be more generous with yourself.

Or, you can decide “for X number of days, I’m not going to worry about points, and if I gain a couple of pounds, oh, well. . .” The nice thing about deciding this ahead of time is that you never get the destructive feeling of being out of control.

Best of luck!

Hi you all, anybody have a good treatment for these unsightly stretch marks that are showing up as I lose weight? Something that helped after a pregnancy, perhaps? Thanks.

Thanks, Norinew! I might just go the route of “forget it for a few days and don’t feel guilty.” The sugar-free Jello sounds like a good idea as well.

Shoshana, I had some luck with a substance called Vita-K stretch mark remover. It’s this thick lotion, you can buy it at ShopKo, and it’s meant to be applied every day. Although it couldn’t stitch the stretched skin back together for me, it certainly faded the marks from liver color to nearly skin-tone.

Cadbury Angel - FWIW, my wisdom tooth anecdote is - you’ll barely know anything happened and you’ll be eating your next meal as normal. Obviously, YMMV. Probably varies depending on your choice of anesthesia.

Thanks, CadburyAngel.

Say, friends, I’m looking at the Williams-Sonoma catalogue and fantasizing about an ice cream maker. Is sugar necessary to the freezing process/texture of ice cream and sorbet, or should I get one of these kitchen toys and experiment with making unsweetened/less sweetened/isomalt sweetened frozen goodies?

Shoshana, since several popular brands of ice cream offer no-sugar-added varieties, I guess it would be safe to say that sugar is not necessary to the freezing/texture. Hubby and I have toyed with the idea of buying an ice cream maker so we can get some variety. lowcarbluxury.com sells a particular variety of powdered (or granulated) sugar alcohol. All the NSA ice creams we have had feature sugar alcohol as its’ primary sweetener. My WAG would be that it’s considerably less expensive than Splenda.

Keep us posted!

Saturday morning weigh-in!! After holding steady at 235 for three Saturdays straight, this morning I tipped the scales at 231!

I remember earlier in this thread, or maybe it was in the previous thread, the subject of drivers license weight came up. Mine is 185. When I weighed that, I was about a size 16-18. I’d like to be there again. I think I’ll make that a goal, for now. That doesn’t sound too unrealistic, does it?

Gr8Kat, sounds like a reasonable goal to me. Especially since Oregon never issues a new license anyway (my scuffed renewal sticker made airport security very jumpy on a recent trip).

Okay. Finally got back to the gym (first time in a month). Did an extra-light workout. I have lost 13 pounds this month for a total of (y’all ready for this?) 57 pounds!! (norinew does happy dance).

This puts me at almost exactly the halfway point, 58 pounds to go!

Whats the best way to lose weight - particularly in one area of the body. Up top im ok but my butt and thighs aren’t. What would be the best diet and exercise program to lose there and not all over?

Watcher, AFAIK, there really is no specific diet for “spot reducing”. You have to go on a total weight-loss plan (there are lots of them around. Just look for one you can live with), lose weight and trust Mother Nature will subtract the pounds appropriately! As for exercising, you can certainly target those areas, with aerobics that concentrate heavily on lower body, and weight-training that tones lower body.

Congratulations, norinew!

Some combination of post-travel issues and heat has made me gain 3.5 pounds this week :-(, though my intake and exercise have remained constant. I’m hoping it’s just water retention. fortunately, my Foldaway Elliptical Strider arrived two seconds ago by UPS!

Thought I’d pop back in here long enough to say congrats to Gingy and norinew on how they’re doing, and good luck to everyone!

I keep waiting to stop bouncing around so much before posting, and it seems all my weight has done over the past several weeks is bounce around. I’ve been anywhere from 181 to 186. Right now I’m temporarily right smack in the middle of that range, at 183.5, which is doing pretty good really, since I just came back from a week at the in-laws, where I almost invariably gain weight. But that’s where I was at the end of the previous thread, so it isn’t that good.

But no more in-laws trips scheduled for several months now, so I ought to be able to make some headway.

shoshana and RTFirefly, Thanks!!

In the interest of keeping a positive attitude, perhaps you could think of it like this: where would your weight be if you weren’t trying to lose weight? I mean, with me, either I’m working at losing or maintaining weight loss, or I’m gaining. If you weren’t mindful of your eating, don’t you think it’s possible you would have gained several pounds by now?

Hope you get back on track soon.

MeanJoe checking in here, it has been a little while. I thought I’d post an update on my stats, as I got to reviewing the past Excel spreadsheet I had been keeping measurements recorded in. I began keeping stats on 3/3/03, 3 weeks after I started this diet & exercise change. I don’t know what my original measurements would have been but me weight was at 214 so…

3/3/03
Weight: 202.3
BMI: 29.7
Neck: 16 3/4
Chest: 40 1/5
Navel: 39
Waist: 38 3/4
Pubic: 40 1/2
Bicep: 12 3/4
Thigh: 22 1/2
Calve: 16

7/3/03
Weight: 178.6
BMI: 20.3
Neck: 15 7/8
Chest: 39
Navel: 34 1/2
Waist: 34 1/2
Pubic: 38
Bicep: 14
Thigh: 22 1/2
Calve: 15 3/4

It really feels good to see the differences there. The amount of compliments I continue to receive from people about how different, and much better, I look are a real plus too.

MeanJoe

Can I play too?

I’ve been “doing” WW points since April of 2002, and I’ve lost approximately 25 lbs. total. (Started at 285, currently 260, which I haven’t seen in ten years. I can’t tell you how happy I am about that.)
Unfortunately, most of that was in the first 4 - 5 months.
To all you WW people, I pass along this bit of learning: always always always record your eating. Even if you’re not counting points for that time. I went on vacation for a week and I didn’t have control over the menu at all. I figured, “I just won’t record for this week, and I’ll be careful of what I eat.”
It has taken me eleven months to get back “on the wagon”.
And that was mainly because my BP was up at my latest doc appointment and she told me that if my weight and BP didn’t go down by next month, I was going to get put on BP medication (since it was in the borderline-high range).

however, this is a good thing, because it’s going to get me in the habit of logging everything I eat again.

Oh, and: Ghirardelli Double-Chocolate Brownie Mix is Your Friend. If you make it with unsweetened applesauce instead of oil (a straight-up substitution), and you make the brownies the size they call for and so forth they’re only two points each.

Welcome aboard DogMom, although things have quieted down significantly the last few weeks.

Well, if we wanna make it more active, DogMom and I can take up the slack.

Not too heavy here, but what I got ain’t muscle. I’ve weighed 155 my entire adult life until my marriage, whereupon I’ve skyrocketed to 195. My wife’s family eats out at least 3x a week, and I happily joined in, still used to my younger metabolism and not used to American-sized portions. So I figured I’d nip this in the bud as my mother’s family is prone to excessive stoutness.

So my sister, who is also trying to lose weight, has encouraged me to join WW, which I started on Wednesday last. My first “weigh-in” date is this coming Sunday, and I’m preparing to be disappointed as it’ll be my first one without even a week’s worth of dieting.

Incidentally, for others who are planning on starting diets, do not make the first day the same day you take your 3-year-old niece to Chuck E. Cheese’s. It doesn’t work.

Current: 195 lbs
Primary (10%) goal: 177 lbs.
Ultimate goal: 160-165 lbs.

Wish me luck.
