The Shield 4/3/07

Aaaah. It didn’t register that he was tricking Vic into staying away – I was too stunned by Kavanaugh planting evidence.

Vic was interesting in this episode, but what really hit me was Shane’s guilt and Kavanaugh’s desperation.

Very good start to the season.

Argh, I just watched my tape, and it cut off before the end – after Vic threatened Kavanaugh at his house, right when Dutch, Hottie Cop, and the other cop were going to the “cousin’s” house, and saw the cats and some bloody pawprints. What happened after that?

I thought that too! I was traumatized by the Dutch/cat incident and it very nearly put me off the series altogether. We were watching this week with our cat, and I covered his eyes when the cats came on screen for fear that Dutch would have a relapse.

Kavanaugh is simply maddening. I am extremely hopeful that he will have an awesome comeupance (awesome for me, not so much for him) in a way that leaves Vic & co. clean. Maybe Dutch could strangle him.

…You know Vic’s a BAD guy right?

I would say he’s more chaotic neutral.

Yeah, but that’s why this show is so awesome!

Yeah, but I want him to be a good guy. For a character who was established from the get-go as a cop killer, the writers do a great job of twisting my emotional response around so that I’m rooting for him more often than not, making it all the more dramatic and agonizing when he does something awful.

They entered the house and started counting bodies, and body parts. It was gross.

Kavanaugh went to Vic’s house and planted evidence – cash, a matchbook, and some other stuff I didn’t catch.

There may have been more but that’s all I remember.

And what looked like a printout of a map with an address or location circled on it, which he crumpled up and put in the trash.

The last line of the episode, as Kavanaugh was leaving, was him mumbling “Nothing personal.”

Argh, I HATE Kavanaugh, just absolutely hate him! He’s bugged me from the first and I can’t put my finger on why, aside from the fact that Forest Whitaker kinda gives me the heebie jeebies at the best of times and this is certainly NOT his most sympathetic character. I was waiting for somebody to call bullshit on him and Amalia for saying that Vic threatened her kid, because no matter what else he’ll do he has an incredible soft spot for the younguns. Amalia pissed me off too, what a skanky little weasel she is–sell her momma for a quarter she would…

I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets nervous every time Dutch is around a cat–that was one of the most creepy, disgusting, outright shocking scenes I’ve ever run into on a TV show, and even in the context of THIS show it’s right up there for revulsion factor. Guy getting his faced shoved onto a red hot stovetop? No problem. Acevedo having to blow the guy? Gross but bearable. Dutch strangles the kitty cat? AAAAAAAHHHH!!!11!! I guess that says something about us as viewers but nevertheless it was a shocker. Didn’t help that the cat looked like one of mine…

I’m gonna cheer when Vic twists Kavanaugh’s head off–I know that technically Kavanaugh’s supposed to be the good guy and Vic’s supposed to be the bad guy, but it just don’t play that way to me.

I agree that it’s partly the way the character is written, and partly Whitaker himself. Aside from the vendetta against Vic, the guy is weird. Can you see him in a job interview? All that hemming and hawing and long pauses in the wrong places and sucking his teeth … it is driving me crazy how the chief guy (I forgot his name, the guy from headquarters who shows up to strong-arm whoever the captain is at the time) keeps telling Kavanaugh he’s done, and then Kavanaugh does his “ahhh… ahhh… Vic Mackey … ahhh…” routine, and the chief guy caves, like “oh okay, if you put it that way.”

I’m glad that Dutch and Claudette seem to be on to the fact that something is weird about his story about meeting the C.I. at that (diner?) and Claudette at least seemed to register some doubt when she said that Vic threatened her kid. Claudette didn’t say anything, but she had that Claudette look. Right now I am choosing to believe that Claudette is electing to keep her cards close to the vest rather than confront Kavanaugh.
