I was a latecomer to the series, (caught it during a marathon week) but damn…It just kicked.
The story!
The characters!
The freakin’ opening sequences!
Tomorrow night they begin running another 2 episode-per-night marathon, which will end with the season premiere on the 7th. (I think…need to re-check)
Another season of watching Vic Mackey do the right thing…sorta.
I can hear the theme song running through my head already…
The thing I love about that show is that it takes a turn with the hard boiled police officer that you don’t typically see: he’s the protagonist, but at the same time the show clearly presents his actions in a negative light. On the Shield honest police work in the end is just as effective as Mackey’s methods but less damaging. Vic’s dramatic and the focus but the toiling supporting characters get just as much done. If the show was a hardline, justification of his behavior (putting the real criminals in their place!) like certain movies I would have found it unwatchable, but I just love seeing Vic crumble one little piece at a time…
What I appreciate is the fact that the characters are not one-dimensional Classic Bad Guys, or Classic Good Guys. Mackey may have shot a cop, but he also took in a prostitute’s child so se could try to beat her drug addiction.
Does anyone else remember that amazing commercial that they ran to advertise the first season? It was filmed in reverse, with some sequences in slow motion. (Eventually it reveals that Mackey shot a man who was holding a woman hostage. When he lets her go, Mackey says, “Good” and then shoots him.) It was a beautiful piece of cinema.
