I would be curious about non-seismic earthquakes.
Unfortunately xkcd jumps from magnitude 11 straight to magnitude 15 in his short video, but 11 already looks hard to survive.
PS- I’m very sorry for all the typos. Typing on a phone keyboard is horrible.
PPS- The 'lets rob the house because it has a massive basement bunker’ seems to be most of the plot to ‘Dracula 2000’ ( Besides Jeri Ryan ) .
Maybe meaning Intensity, not Magnitude scale? And even then I would suspect the builder was thinking to himself “right, you gonna be around to sue after THAT happens?”
Not quite at that level, but the hurricane-resistant doors we had installed in our house in Miami would, I expect, have taken a while to breach. They opened outward, and were a combination of hollow-core steel and double-paned impact resistant safety glass, with decorative steel grillwork on either side of the glass. I’d bet a tidy sum of money that your average schmucks in tactical gear wouldn’t be able to breach the doors through impacts; they would almost certainly be able to shoot through the glass, but it would take multiple shots to clear some space.
Funnily enough, when we were shopping around for the doors and windows, the next grade up from what we picked was marketed as, “blast-proof.” Seemed excessive to me, but it is Miami.
You are probably right in as much as I’ve never had so much money that I could just throw it at problems and fears. This is along that line… but slightly different.
Do you remember back in the day when bank branches had that super-super thick glass in front of the tellers? It was what… 3 to 4 inches thick? An acquaintance who was a volunteer fireman went to a house where no one was home that was on fire and tried to get inside. The door probably one of your massively re-enforced door with no windows so… no way in. He and his crew moved around to the beach side and tried to get in that way. No dice. The entire beach front window was that bank teller glass… and even sledge hammers bounced off of it!
Long story short, he and his crew had no choice… so they pulled back to the street sprayed water on the house and basically let it burn. There was no way in… what could they do?
