The Simpsons; 16/01/2011 (open spoilers)

Well that was interesting. The whole episode could’ve been done without any of the Simpsons and the A story would’ve been exactly the same and the B story slightly different. I liked the callback to all the other times Moe’s remodeled the bar.

I almost didn’t watch it thinking it was a rerun. IIRC, the last time he remodeled the bar, it was based around a drink (that had cough medicine in it?) called the Flaming Moe.

Flaming Moe’s was from season 3. The other remodels are all from later than that. Seasons 7, 13, and 16.

Although this episode is named for that one.

The trompe l’oeil pretzels and first aid kit nearly killed me.

Who played the music sub?

Kristen Wiig, apparently.

Kristen Wiig, with Alyson Hannigan as the daughter.

Making Alyson the second ‘Buffy the vampire slayer’ girl to be a kinda-sorta romantic interest for Bart Simpson, as I make it. (Sarah Michelle Gellar from the Juvie episode being the first one.)

O.M.G. Did he just say “Lemon Party?”

Joe

Yes. Do NOT Google it. NSFL (not safe for Life).

I did like Smithers and his sorta-integrity, though, and all the funny gay guys in their stereotypical categories, glum with their choice of Moe and the probable closet case.

The Simpsons themselves were pretty peripheral, although Homer’s always been pretty cool with teh gay and, like Marge, I’ve been in bars where my brain is insisting “It is NOT safe to get buzzed here.”

Heh. I told my roommate, whatever she does, don’t look it up.

Very solid and funny episode. Commence hating, Haters.

Always? Oh, Mehitabel, you are the livin’ end…

I believe Scott Thompson was in there as well, reprising an earlier role.

Yes. That part had me in stitches. The first aid kit is what really cracked me up.

And I couldn’t believe they mentioned Lemon Party! That, and a Tom of Finland reference in the same episode, wow.

I’m not certain, but I think there was a subliminal in the scene at the arcade. It appeared to me that as the characters moved backwards (Skinner & Jennifer I think), a machine behind them said Toyota of Death as they passed. When they moved forward, it read Tough Of Death.

Well, a game called “Touch of Death” was featured in a much earlier episode.

Is it just me, or do the writers seem to be explicitly referencing earlier seasons in every episode so far this season?

It strikes me as slovenly writing. Or maybe just pandering.

That’s what I saw in this one.

When Smithers told Moe he wanted to “discuss an inventory issue in the back room,” I wanted all the customers to go “OOOOOoooooh!”

Are gays really that rejecting of sympathetic straights? Sounds kinda shallow.

I don’t think the show was saying that. The gay community rejected Moe because he misrepresented himself. If he’d been honest all along, there would presumably have been no problem.

I dunno, there was a lot of “one of us” stuff going on. Of course, most of it seemed to be coming from Smithers who was becoming envious of Moe’s popularity, so maybe it’s just his hang-up.
