If that wasn’t a grab bag of ideas ep. I don’t know what is. Hate to sound like the folks who are always complaining that this or that one was the worst one ever, but tonight’s pretty much blew dinos, IMHO.
They got a little too cutesy with the concept: Tale within a tale within a tale…
Moe and Mrs. Krabapple was … um, yeah.
WTF was up with the Simpsons tonight?
I couldn’t disagree more. It was a very strong episode–I thought it was one of the better efforts in the last few seasons. Plenty of good references, and the development of minor characters (e.g., Snake & the Texas dude).
It reminded me of the 20 Stories about Springfield episode. A definite “A” in my book.
Plus it had cameos by Commander McBragg and Uncle Moneybags!
It was a brilliant script! Probably one of the best yet! I especially loved the “Wooly Bully” telling the story about his escapade…
A grab-bag, sure, but they made it work pretty well. I was worried it was going to be yet another “Tales from the Public Domain”-type episode, and from that standpoint at least it was something different. A couple of good jokes, and I was amused by the ram telling his story.
Monty comparing a spray-tanned Smithers to an orange cream-sicle was worth the price of admission for me!
Any OTHER sitcom on TV with a script that good and people would be saying, “This is a LOCK for an Emmy next year!” It’s just mildly above par for the Simpsons.
This is the best episode in a long time. But I also know that the next really great episode is going to be a long way off. Why do they tease us so? This proved that they can do great stuff, why so many crappy episodes the last few seasons?
I really enjoyed it. I thought it was really funny and well done. I am surprised by the WTF.
Jim
I thought that was a pretty good episode. The story-within-a-story-within-a-story thing was very funny. I was curious as to where another story would begin. And the ending gag involving the “final story” was priceless. And I liked Snake’s backstory.
The Rich Texan I found funny as well, especially since I used to have a condition similar to his. "There’s some producers. One…twothreefour. Four producers.
I would give my opinion but “Weather News” broke in TWICE lasting 10 minutes each time. 20 full minutes total for storms at the edge of the viewing audience.
The endless “flashbacks within flashbacks” kinda reminded me of the movie Sorry, Wrong Number. I missed the first segment, but still thought it was pretty cute.
“All that summer, I was the perfect gentleman, so Krabapple would let me do her.” Comedy gold.
I liked it. I always like to see Burns being a, well, a billionaire, doing billionaire stuff. Liked them stealing Homer’s hairs. And Maggie happily playing guns along with everybody else during the Mexican standoff.
But it was strange that Marge, the only smart non-baby in the exploratory group, missed the entrance that Moe and Burns and the Texan and Snake just waltzed into.
I loved the whole episode.
Actually, Snake had the cool entrance from the ceiling.
Therefore he deserved the gold.
The show didn’t make me laugh out loud, but it had me smiling a few times, and – more imporantly – I didn’t have to cringe hardly at all. Not too bad for a recent episode.
A question though: did anyone else think that Edna Krabappel’s voice sounded completely different? I would have sworn it was a new voice, but Marcia Wallace is still listed as being on the show on IMDB, and I hadn’t heard anything about her being replaced. Am I hearing things, or did anyone else notice it?
I think Wallace was trying to play slightly-younger Edna as less hardened, less cynical, more naïve, etc. Certainly softer in tone and heart.
I guess the derisive “Ha!” came after trying to teach Bart for a few months.
It’s what Bryan Ekers said. (And as much as I hate to say it, she was a little bit sexy.) From the second she got off the bus, I could tell it was only going to be ‘last summer’- that is, it’d turn out she’d been in Springfield for less that a year. That’s one of those imperfect retcons that the show has done so often in recent years. I call 'em Tamzarians. Ah well. It is what it is.
Well, Edna has previously stated she is not from Springfield originally. From the Bicentennial/Jedidiah Springfield epsiode:
Edna: Embiggens…I never heard that word before I moved to Springfield.
Ms. Hoover: I don’t see why not, it’s a perfectly cromulent world.
