The Simpsons 5/16 Fundies vs Darwin

After seeing Marge read The Origin of Species and say that she had a way for her to win, only to give Homer a beer he can’t open causing him to hoot and holler like a monkey was kind of a let down for me. Still, there were some pretty great lines, like Skinner’s quip about Lamarkian evolution. Barney saying “Homer’s son’s sister is right!” also got a chuckle out of me.

Incidentally, they did a jab at the Kansas State Board of Education on Family Guy last night, too. Interesting that both shows would joke along the same lines in the same night.

The multi-purpose room is usually an auxiliary room that is used for a couple of activities. A single-purpose room would ordinarily just be called by the use it’s put to, like say “the Band Room.”

Great episode. I liked the students’ reaction to Lisa’s rebuttal of the propaganda movie.

Ralph: “The George Will?!”

I loved that, too.

I thought the jigsaw puzzle scene was taken from one of the 70’s detective shows like “Cannon”.

two Great Minds with but a single thought:

from post #17:

Did anyone else find it odd that they never used the phrase “Intelligent Design” in the episode, but talked about “creationism” and “creation theory” instead. Perhaps the writers figured that most people don’t recognize ID as the current incarnation of Creationism and didn’t want to confuse the issue.

I noticed that too. I think you’re right, but also remember that there are still hardcore “Young Earth Creationists” out there who identify as such and Flanders would fit right into that category.

I disagree. I think it was Cannon.

I’ve seen The List of Adrian Messenger. The unmaskings are not terribly interesting when you don’t know who the “Major Stars” are. OK story, though.

Jeannie popping everything into creation and the music was great. I thought it was a harsh subject to tackle and am surprised there hasn’t been more backlash. Perhaps I’ve missed it.

Wasn’t that Family Guy?

Overall I didn’t like this episode that much. It had plenty of laughs, as most Simpsons eps do, but I generally don’t like the topical ones.

I see it as lazy writers, needing to use the real-life news to get ideas for their show. And I don’t need to see the Simpson’s take on all these issues. Gay marriage, the NRA (ok, that one was a good episode), medical marijuana, etc. I watch the Simpsons for a zany escape from real life, if I wanted to see news and opinions, I’d watch CNN. Or the Daily Show.

Yeah, it was Family Guy.
